hey guys im in the military and am going to be deploying soon and I plan on taking my 08 hwy 1 with me. I plan on removing the neck and packing the neck and body together for shipping since im taking a military aircraft and space is cramped (and i dont want the head snapped off). Do you think thats a good idea?

Eeeee. Having flown Mil Air more times than I can count, the idea of traveling with a real Strat makes me queasy.

Have you thought about buying a pawn shop beater instead?

Or, if you must travel with the Fender, have you invested in the hardest case you can find?

Best of luck to you both! :)

Ebayers do it all the timeon size restricted packages overseas. Your neck is going to be the most vulnerable regardless of how you pack it. Are you traveling with it or will it travel seperatley? You could put the neck in the center of your duffle and cram it full of BDUs but it would need to lay horizontal.
Good luck

What about getting an actual flight case for it? Like and anvil or a calzone, maybe a gator...

ya i have a case and im bringing a gig bag but, Im not going to have a bunch of room thats why im not traveling with it in its case. I have thought of hitting up the pawn shop but, im going to be gone for awhile and I want a guitar that stays in tune and doesnt have fret buzz all over it.

If it's a nice Strat I'd leave it at home. The top end Squiers are really pretty good these days. I'd pick up one of those then dismantle for travel by all means, but whatever, you won't be dreading a bad accident.

Dunno where you're going, but take plenty of strings!

My nephew's been in Iraq twice on long tours and is set to go to Afghanistan any time now. Maybe you'll see each other: he's quite a handy guitarist...

Good luck - C

Take it with you! Enjoy it, what else should it be except played? Take that chance!

Here's another point, and please don't be offended, OK? This is a Highway One guitar. It's not a Custom Shop Masterbuilt. You're not gonna loose 5G if something happens.

I have to agree with some of these other posts. I am ex-Army. I would suggest buying a lower-end guitar to take with you on a deployment. Go to a pawn shop and get a cheap Fender. All sorts of things happen to your belongings on mil air. All sorts of things can happen while deployed as well...sniper fire, gernades, someone eyeballing your equipment. I am sure that having your guitar shot or blown up would be almost as bad as your buddy being shot. Hope your deployment is safe, keep your head down.

Take it, play it, enjoy it.
Just take measurements of your setup before you take it apart. And you can get Fender's suggested set-up from it's own site if you'd rather.
And, really, it's the military. There will be a rather large military support squad on the base. SOMEONE will have the technical ability to help you re-set-up your guitar. Do bring that tiny L shaped hex-head tool with you just in case.

And the earlier suggestion that you bring lots of strings is a real good idea.

Love,
Todd

Ya i stopped by the pawn shop here in town and nothing does it for me. This guitar is the cheapest of my group that plays worth a damn thats why I decided to bring it and not my '66 SG and who knows maybe that thin nitro honey paint will wear down real nice with all the sand around.

Anyway thanks for all the suggestions I will keep them in mind. By the way has anyone used the VOX amPLUG yet? I tried one in the localguitar store and ended up buying all three kinds. I think Im going to get some quality playing while not working the in the sandbox. thanks again and Ill be sure to lay down some lead for ya.

Matt

I`m a veteran also and after seeing how these guys throw things around I agree with the other suggestions and would leave it home. Pick up a cheap guitar at your next destination, if it gets damaged you won`t feel so bad.

Bass player in my old band used to do it all the time. He thought it was better than a cheap flightcase. I never agreed with him, but his guitar suffered no adverse effects. Just wrap it up make sure its well cushioned and insulated.
