Did the deal, damn the wait :x

Last guitar I picked up was a Highway 1 Fat Strat that I found on Craig's list for a few hundred bucks. Anyway, I traded emails with this dude for a couple of weeks before we finally met up at a local 7-11 to exchange, and it turned out I knew the guy. He used to play guitar in a band with some friends of mine just a few short years ago. I actually had a chance to tour with them last year just before they decided to call it quits.

Craig's list is funny that way. That's not the first time I bought something from a friend after seeing listed. The last one was an American Series Seymour Duncan Fat Strat that now has two humbuckers and a three way toggle switch (Gibson style). I drilled out the "Volume" hole on the pickguard for the toggle, followed by one master tone, then the actual Volume knob where the second tone would normally be, so that I don't have to worry about anything getting in the way if I want to play with it.

Dropped in some sweet ebony strat-style knobs too.

Any way, I hope my pointless ramblings helped to kill some time until the guitar fairy brings you your next toy. Cheers!

I agree with the comments re: pic #4---I pulled one of the strats out of my collection and it surely appears that fret work has been done. After comparing the pic to a '65, I was unsure. So---I pulled out my favorite (a '63) for comparison. If you will notice, it appears someone has gotten a little heavy with the hammer on fret numbers 19 and 21 if my memory serves me (maybe 20 and 22?). However, I am no expert---would recommend taking it to a local REPUTABLE restoration shop and see what they say. GOOD LUCK!

Like I said, pretty typical of American Made Fenders from this era. I don't know if it was the finish they were using or the conditions, but when I sold Fender guitars in the late 90's I had many guitars come back with the same problem. Sometimes only after a month of being played. The Maple fret board guitars were worse, because they finished the frets themselves, on the sides anyway. As you play the guitar, the finish flakes off the frets. After a while it flakes off the fretboard and... well you get the idea. I guess whatever they were using was too brittle a finish.

I myself own an American Standard that dates 1998 by the neck pocket and 1997 by the Serial. Mine isn't as bad as some I've seen from the same era, but there are indications that it could be a real problem in the future.

I also own an American P Bass Deluxe from the same year and there is actually a small spot on the headstock where the finish just flaked off.

It's difficult to see in the picture, but in photo 2 if you look at the side of the nut, I think you can sort of see the same phenomenon happening. The finish is still intact, but may be lifting from the side of the nut. Over all I think this guitar is in great shape, just going from the pics, and even with this neck finish, it will probably hold up much better than the Highway 1.

By the way, I never saw this occur with any of the Mexican Fenders or Korean, or Indonesian... you get the idea.
