Thinking of swapping my Tele for it.

particularly interested in your thought on pic #4 and the frets? He says it's as it should be and no work was done to them?

From that angle it looks to me like some kind of fret work has been done, but it could just be the picture.

thats what he said it was but you can see up the fretboard the frets look right IMO. Is it worth risking a burst/maple hwy 1 tele?

Hi Twisty: could be wrong but I presume that pickguard is a user mod, would that be right? I'm not recalling a combination of pearl 'guard and that color finish - but I stand to be corrected on that.

Far as the fret ends are concerned: interested to hear what others say, but to my eye it is probably OK. The lacquer continues from the maple on across the rosewood to the top edge. The top of the fingerboard is not coated.

What sometimes happens is that lacquer cracks around the fret ends with a mixture of changes in temperature and the wear of playing. If temperature and humidity changes are strong enough the fret ends can actually emerge from the wood as the timber expands and contracts: maybe that has happened a little here.

The only thing that seems slightly surprising is that the flaking off of the lacquer around the frets is so consistent and regular. Does it look the same way on the other side of the neck?

I want to tidy up the lie of those saddles a little, but other than that I'm not seeing a problem. But there's some much sharper eyed folks round here, so let's see what they say...

Cheers - C

Ah-ha! Well there you go, then. Even the pickguard's kosher.

So now all we want to know is why the fella's letting it go?

Good luck - C

He prefers Tele's. Plays in a worship group supposedly. Long story short by way of a couple guitars my hot rodded MIM Fat Strat turned into this Tele which is sweet. But my Swede is my fav & a 3rd will never get played right now. I prefer Strats I'm finding out for the versatility. I have been debating on just keeping the Tele & buying a Strat after the holidays but I honestly don't need a bunch of guitars (not a huge house) plus I have nothing with a trem since I gave my son the Ibanez & Charvel.

This appears to be a stock original 1999 Fender Lonestar Strat, not to be confused with the Made In Mexico version that is currently in production. Although, this one does have the same pickup configuration (Two Texas Specials, and one Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus Humbucker), the main difference being the 5-way super-switch stock in the American version VS. the standard 5-way in the Mexican one.

This finish and pickguard combo was available on the Lonestar, Roadhouse, and Big Apple Strats (Looks like Teal Green Metallic). These three guitars made up the Hot Rod Series that was only produced from the mid 90's up until the early 2000's (not 100% sure of the dates). The one in the picture seems to be pretty typical of one that wasn't abused too much, just played well. It was normal for the American Fenders from this period to have flaking of the finish on the neck, although it was much more noticeable on the guitars with Maple fretboards because the fretboards themselves were finished. The original hardshell case was a deluxe black tolex G&G with the Fender Amp Logo.

In short, I would go for the trade.

[quote="strauboids"]This appears to be a stock original 1999 Fender Lonestar Strat:

22 fret rosewood board is legit then; this one is trem; did they do that sort of thing 10 years ago with respect to trem/non-trem other than the American Standard?

This guitar is a "Hot Rodded American Fat Strat Texas Special." I know this because I own one. Purchased it in early 2002 new. The color is Teal Green Metallic (which is closer to blue than green). The single-coil pickups are Texas Specials, and the humbucker is a SD Pearly Gates. It appears to have no visible modifications. No longer available from Fender.

Now I don't have to post pictures of my guitar.

Your Fat strat probably has one string tree. This one has two. Different tuners also.
