Which would be the best of these two? American Deluxe HSS, or American Special Mahogany HSS? Can you buy the American Special at any dealer?

"best" is relative to what you require. ive played the deluxe HSS and its a beauty.

It will sound more "stratty" than the mohagany guitar. I havnt played the mohagony one, but id say that i could be pretty accurate in guessing it will not sound very stratty, as it has two humbuckers and is made from a wood thats very different to what strats generally are composed of.

id guess it would be more like a gibson SG or something of that nature. you really need to play it if you are totally unsure of what it will sound like.

id say they are both fine instruments but remember, what sounds good to you may not sound good to someone else. just read reviews on any strat on harmony central, one review will give sound a 10, the next would give the guitar a 5. its all what you hear thats important.

Play both. The one that plays and sounds the best is the one for you. Before I purchace a guitar, I have to play it. If it doesn't "feel" right, I pass it by. The American Mahogany you may have to special order...not very common, but not unatainable from a good guitar store. It has been my experience that if you have to special order, you are stuck with it.

The situation is, no one in my area has either guitar. 1200 dollars is what were looking at. I like what I have heard about both, but if it was a decision you would have to make what would you do? Thanks for all your advice.

Check out Musicians Friend and some of the other online dealers, most of them will give you a trial period so that you can return the instrument if it isn't what you want, but you may have to pay to ship it back.

If I were forced to choose without having played either instrument I would pick the American Deluxe HSS.

I have a Stratocaster with a solid mahogany body, and I like the tone very much. It is different than what you get from ash or alder. It does have a nice warm tone to it. If you like to be a little different, go for the mahogany body Special.
