Yes, it is a terrible sin. The only thing you can do to save yourself is send that terrible LP to me....immediately...

Ok fellow forum friends, I got a question/problem - Help please, advice needed!

I have been a loyal strat player since I got my first one at 16 in 1991 - Over the years I have had a number of MIA strats - well, last week my gf gave me an early Christmas gift, a 2008 Les Paul Standard - Now, for a brief time, I owned a LP Studio, didnt care much for it, and also owned a MIA Tele for a short time - other than that, the last 17 years, ive been a loyal strat player - my friends always give me hell saying that strats arent the only guitars out there, but I have always stayed true to my strats and thats all ive played

Problem is, well, guess it isnt a problem really, but, this new Les Paul is the best playing guitar ive ever owned - it sounds amazing, plays like a dream, and its beautiful! It almost feels like im cheating on my girls!! lol

Is it a sin for a strat guy to stray?

ASG,

Ultimately it is your guitar. I also like Gibson Les Pauls and Flying V's. You can still play Fender and have a Gibson in your arsenal. I am a long time Fender Strat man, but if I had a chance buying a Gibson Les Paul right now, it be right next to my Fender Stratocaster. Have fun with it. If you feel like your cheating...at least it's with a supermodel of guitars and not a cheap $@!$ like my ESP. :)

I have to say that a good Strat is liking coming home to an old friend or something. I got a Yamaha SA2200 (335 alike) earlier this year and she is beautiful and far exceeds the build and material quality of most Fenders. However there is something special about the Strat and always will be. Owning other guitars from other manufacturers will only make you appreciate them more and probably benefit your playing too as you find different 'chops' suit the different set-ups.
Point is, there is nothing wrong with a little switcheroo now and again!

In my 30 years of playing guitar, I have owned Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Dean, Kramer, Epiphone, BC Rich, Aria, Kay, Harmony, Squire and others. In my opinion, there is just too much variety out there for one guitar company to satify me. I LOVE my Fender guitars, and the feel and tone they have. But that doesn't mean that the other brands don't have something to offer. It is all about different sounds!!
Limiting yourself to one brand, let alone one guitar, is kinda like an artist only using one color to paint with. If you can't hear the subtle shades of tonal variance, than stay with one guitar. Many great guitarist are known to only have used one guitar or model. Just remember, Hendrix played a Gibson Flying V quite often.

I know what you mean, but surely all of our favourites - who tend to stick to Strats, aside from a little dabbling - can't all be playing in black and white!

There is an argument I suppose for getting to know one type of guitar so well that your playing personality can only truly be communicated through that instrument. I do think you would be missing out though.
Since straying myself I have been thinking it a real shame that EC doesn't play a 335 once in a while. I understand the commercial reasons for it, but I would love to hear the old 'woman tone'...

The "From The Cradle" CD was recorded with quite a variety of Gibson guitars which he also used when he toured. I have also seen concert footage of him playing a red 335. Some of these guitars he may no longer own. Two 335's went at auction in 2004.

He seems to rely more on the Stratocaster and his Martin acoustic these days.

I did wonder about the guitars on that album I must admit. No wonder I like it so much.
Still it just illustrates most peoples point on this thread that it is a good thing to spread the love to other brands.

I have 2 fenders and a new Gibson LP, right now my LP has been in the case for quite sometime. I bought the LP thinking I needed it, well, I really don't, I can get all the tones I like from my strat and tele, I prefer the feel of my fenders, not that there is anything wrong with the LP, it is a fine guitar. I don't think it's cheatin', especially if you like it.

Don't feel guilty. I love 'em both too, although I prefer the Strat. But I've had an LP that I loved too. It just wasn't as comfortable to play as my Strat. I love the sound of them though.
