Homebrew's Power Screamer OD and a Mimic anolog delay. These some of the best pedals I have used in 20 years. I also can't live without my Korg Pitchblack.

I love to play with pedals and have accumulated quite a collection over the years, but when it comes to getting down to business, I just plug into either my Rivera Knucklehead, or my Mesa F-50. The Mesa has a spring reverb with independent controls for each channel, but the Rivera is strictly dry. Another head I use is a Blackface Bassman.... no reverb there.

Recording is slightly different. I always use a reverb and sometimes a tremolo or phaser. The occasional wah makes it's way into one or two songs I've recorded, but when it comes to live, there's no substitute for pure tube tone and the stuff you can only produce with your hands.

The Rivera is a recent acquisition and I must say I've been nothing but thrilled with it. If I had to have only one amp and nothing else though, I'd have to go with my Music Man 65 Reverb with either a 2X10" or 2X12" cab. Foot-switchable reverb and tremolo is all I would ever really need.

Maybe my Roland Chorus Echo too. That with the Bass Man through a closed back 2X12". Tape delay, analog reverb and chorus... all foot-switchable. Why not throw in the Mutron Phaser also.

Like I said, I love to play with effects, just don't have too much of a use for them.

How did I forget my P.O.G. The greatest pedal ever made!

I also like my Boss MT-2 Metal Zone. Very versatile. To go from a classic distortion sound to modern metal with some twists of the knobs. I also get a lot of use out of my Chorus (Boss CE-3). As I mentioned earlier, I cannot live without my reverb which is built into my amp. :)

When I first started out playing in bands in the late 1970's, effects were few and far between. A fuzz box, wah and maybe a treble booster was all there was(in addition to amp reverb and tremelo). I bought the stuff that was available at the time;
MXR Distortion +
Ibanez AD-80 Analog Delay, CS-9 Stereo Chorus and FL-9 Flanger
Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah-Volume pedal
Morley Slimline vol-wah
When the digital revolution came about, I thought about selling all my old late 70's-early 80's effects, and get the latest rack-mount effects, but I didn't cuz I thought they sounded great. I also thought "Who would want these old analog effects pedals?"
Fast foward to 2008, and all my old effects pedals are now "vintage collectables" WOW, who woulda thunk it!!! It is funny how the old stuff runs in cycles, and analog pedals are now back in style.

A few people have mentioned compression pedals. I just picked up an MXR dynacomp pedal. While it increases sustain by a good amount it makes my amp sound like somebody threw a blanket over it. Am I missing something on this pedal? I was thinking of taking it back and maybe exchanging it for a script phase 90 and going a different direction.

My bad. DOD280 compressor...gray box as well.. :wink:

The compressor before the preamp is expecially useful to get a creamy distortion with single coil, at least my set up it seems that humbuckers don't need that, it just smoothes the distortion.

They were sold by Ibanez, but Maxon made them in the 70's and early 80's.

They do suck your tone ... but an equalizer can help .. somewhat...
