Been there and done that a few times over. I think the hardest part of refinishing a guitar is getting it ready. The prep work of removing the old finish is a pain. After that resealing and paniting is not bad. In the next couple weeks I will be doing one for a friend who wants Dupont light aqua with a aeromax clear coat. Of course I will not order the paint until he fronts the moola about 90. for paint and clear he wants.

One some guitar finishes do not comeoff easy. Two I would not take a belt sander to no guitar body. You cannot control it along the contour of the body in a even manner and even with a fine grit you can take to much and scar the wood were you have to use way to much bondo and have to work the wood to prep it smooth for the finish so that nothing shows.

Sandpaper and remover and occasional use of a dremel. Bondo is forgiving though

What remover do you use? I know to start off with a med sandpaper for sading first layer and then go to fine grain.reseal paint and clearcoat
This body appears to have had a few dives into the crowd and maybe a couple of Pete Townsend whacks! Going to need a BIT of bondo around the belly contour or Id maybe use TRU OIL finish and leave a natural wood

Just thought I'd jump in here and toss out some ideas for ya. I have used a belt sander successfully on bodies. Don't get too carried away, though. They can move a lot of wood underneath the paint. The hardest part is keeping your body from skipping out from under the beltsander. Lay it on a chunk of carpet, or some of that nonskid rubber, like in motorhomes, on top of the carpet. Also, you may want to try some of the universal paint removers out there. Paint em' on with a paintbrush, and the paint blisters up and you can easily scrape it off with a puttyknife. Kinda nasty stuff though. Hope this helps.

As far as that goes, you can always get some rubber gloves, like surgeons wear, only not as expensive. They work great. Peel em' off, throw em' away. Just be sure you use this stuff in a well ventilated area, like outside. The fumes can be fairly intense.

Kleen Strip :D You will find that striping a poly finish is a nightmare and many stirpers will not work. Get a reusable sanding pad that you can wash and reuse or steel wool fine or extra fine with the striper. That way you are not removing or scaring the wood it is being done evenly though out the body along the curves and so on.

Thinking of having a body shop do the finishing for you? Take a look at some of these finishes - go mad! Just a thought...
