Love my Stratocaster, but I've been wanting an alternate guitar to get the sounds a strat can't.

Wanted: Mahogany body (and maybe a maple top), 25.5" scale length (same as strat), upper frets at least as accessible as a Strat (rules out Les Paul), first rate humbuckers, coil tapping would be a bonus, rosewood fingerboard (my Strat's maple), set neck and no whammy so I can get more sustain, and maybe a flatter radius fretboard.

Some of the Reverend guitars have these specs, but I wasn't impressed with their fit and finish. And Gibsons pretty much all have short scale lengths and high prices.

Oh, and I don't want to spend more than about 600 to 700 if I go new.

Fender to the rescue!!!!

The Telecaster FMT has ALL the above specs, and the fit and finish on this 630 dollar guitar are very good. Found a red one on ebay for $416...like new. They come stock with Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and a 59.

I guess I'm bragging on it cuz I like it, but it seems like one hell of a guitar for blues and rock, and doesn't get noticed. Stores don't hardly even stock them. Cuz it's shaped like a telecaster but sounds like a Gibson, maybe it's misunderstood. In my mind, Fender really hit it out of the park with this guitar...they gotta be scratchin their heads over why anyone would still buy an SG for twice the money, when the Fmt is as good or probably better.

Not to mention the way cool body binding, contour on the back, carved maple top, and the red stained headstock with the metallic Fender logo on it.

Just sayin', if you run across one of these and you've been thinkin' about a stable-mate for your Strat, you could do a lot worse.

I was looking for a guitar like that, but my price range went higher than yours.

I really like the new double cut away Carvin California Carved top guitars. Anyone have experience with these? They seem very PRS like but a lot less expensive. unfortunately, I have reservations buying a guitar I cannot see, hold and play first, so I went a totally different direction and bought my first strat. The arched top custom guitar will have to wait.....a long while. However, custom ordered arched top guitar with flamed maple top for under $2000 new seems like as great deal considering LP's and PRS's are over $3000 for the same thing
