Hi all,

I'm curiouse abut something.

I've noticed (I don't own a scale so I can't see exact numbers) my CS '65 is lighter than my MIM 50's and SRV strat. I measured the thickness of the '65's body and found that the MIM and SRV are the same thickness.

Why would the '65 be lighter? All three guitars are made of Alder.

Thanks in advance.

Depends if it was a 2 piece or 3 piece Alder that make up the body of the guitar.....that certainly contributes to the total mass.

Hi dstrats: timber varies in weight a good deal between different trees of the same species.

I've mentioned it here before, but I have felled ash trees on my land (don't have any alder) and found that the timber had distinctly different weights/densities, despite the fact that those trees were a similar age, grew about 50 yards apart on similar soil, and were in all probability self-sown from seeds from the same parent tree. Strange, but true.

Ceri is quite correct. I have seen cuts that are exact in size from the same tree weigh different.

I guess trees just like people are living things and all are different.

[quote="dstrats"]Hi all,

I owned a CS strat which I swapped out recently with an alder body whose weight I was surprised at. It was a heavy guitar. Never bothered to get into details about why, but interesting.

Ceri needs to be careful that 'Treebeard' doesn't find him out in the forest alone with that axe

It does vary which is why when you order a Baseball Bat made of Maple like many do today or Ash you order it by the lenth and the weight. Well if you order two bats at 35" in lenth and 33 Oz. weight they will be the same size at the barrel and the handle but on the end of the barrel one may have a small amount more wood removed in the concaved area to make the bat weight 33OZ. so to match the other because the weight of the two cuts of wood may differ between them If bats were made like guitars then then bats would just be the same dimension but differ in weight be 1oz. or several. Thats not good with Baseball bats you want then to be the same weight as you use for all at bats.

Hi Doc: I am very much on Treebeard's side, I can tell you! Since inheriting my little wood from my grandparents I have so far cut down five trees. None of those was elective surgery: either storm damage or trunks threatening the road.

However, out of enthusiasm as well as guilt I have so far planted around 45 trees to replace them, including oak, beech, birch, yew, lime and mountain ash, as well as some exotics: acers, a woolamai pine from Australia and two seedlings of Cedar of Lebanon that we bought - in Lebanon!

And hopefully some of that felled timber will get put to more creative use than merely stoking the woodburning stove...

I'm with you, Treebeard, honestly!

Cheers - C

Ceri, ever thought of selling bodies and necks? I'd certainly pay for a fresh body that could be traced to source.

Well... a couple of you seem moderately interested in that timber. So, I'll be back in that part of the country in a few days time and maybe I'll do a little thread and show you what's happening with it.

It's probably not for sale, though!

Woah, don't get excited! This is just raw timber we're talking about. But dealing with it presents one or two interesting questions...
