The V-shaped neck is not rounded, its more v-shaped. The C-neck is like the standard idea of a guitar neck. I think.

It's the approximate shape of the back of the neck if you looked at it from the headstock end down or from the butt end up.

C necks are nicely rounded. U necks are a little more chunky.
V's come in hard, medium & soft V's--but all are variations of the back of the neck coming more to a point--a rounded point though--as opposed to rounded more evenly.

There are also D necks.

Here's a link showing C, D & V necks.
http://www.kellyindustries.com/articles/guitar_glossary.html

there are other similar links if you search for them.

I personally prefer C or U necks--although D's can be good too.
I don't like V's, as the "point" goes right where I put my thumb, and I find that awkward & uncomfortable.

According to Jay Black, Custom shop master builder, "The letters A,B,C or D that were stamped on the ends of necks from the early 1960's to 1973 refer to neck WIDTH at the nut-not shape. So when people say they've got a "C" neck referring to shape, they are wrong, although early 60's necks are somewhat C-shaped in profile. But we call that 'oval'. the only letters Fender uses when talking shape are 'U' the shape of that real early '51 - '53 Telecaster- and 'V' for the triangulated shape. Neither of these letters were ever stamped anywhere on a Fender neck. The corresponding nut widths for the old letters are
A = 1 1/2"
B = 1 5/8"
C = 1 3/4"
D = 1 7/8
Currently, all production vintage necks have the B nut width, while the American Standard is slightly wider, falling between the B and C measurements at around 1 11/16"
Fender has 5 basic neck shapes;
Early 50's "U shape" - .900" at 1st fret
Early 50's "Soft V" - .850" at 1st fret
60's style "Oval" - .810 at 1st fret
Mid 50's "Hard V" - .820 at 1st fret
Modern "Flat Oval" - .789" at 1st fret
plus a # 1056 patterned from an Oct. 1956 neck shape. This is a very big V neck, or "boatneck"
Pretty cool stuff from someone who should know, Fender Custom Shop!!

I've always been a fan of the modern C necks. But, after looking at the diagram, that V is looking really good. I'm not sure what that shape reminds me of, but man - I just want that in my hands all day.

After owning a C,U and hard V, and still own a C, U and soft V. I can completely recommend the soft V on the 57 hotrod. Its a thing of shear beauty. Imagine the comfortable palm fill of a U shape, but with a size nearer a C so you can reach round easily.

See if you can find a vendor having a new American Standard, an American Deluxe V-neck, a Clapton, a '57Hotrod, a Buddy Guy MIA or MIM, JVaughan, and a '57RI. There's a mix of necks of good sampling.

Personally, I think that '57Hotrod beats the lot.

That may be true for Fenders, but other guitar makers do make guitars with "C" necks that relate to the link I posted earlier.
