With the relic craze going on and on, I can't beleive I never let you guys and gals know the BEST way to relic your guitar. I was thinking about how I got most of the scratches and scrapes on my gigging guitars, and I realized it coincided with the purchase of my Samson wireless guitar system. When I was tethered to my amp and pedalboard, I could only go so far. But once I was free of the cable, I was venturing off into the crowds, and joining a bunch of drunk patrons. I was stage diving into the mosh pit with abandon. I was getting all sorts of mystery fluids spilled on me and my guitars. I was knocking over pitchers, bouncing off chairs, and generally having no reguard for my beloved axes. My most abused guitars are a 1974 Ibanez Les Paul Custom 2350, and a 1980 Strat which show the wear and tear of my misspent youth.
Free yourself of the cable, and let the relicing begin....Naturally!!!

That's quite interesting.

I'm still not sure I want to subject my guitars to that type of relicing either.

i just bought an american strat a year ago...and the paint has huge chunks removed. Even the maple neck has a big hung taken out around the second fret...making a perfect A chord groove to lock my finger in. All this just from playing ALOT and doing a few shows here and there.

Yeah its all about the time you spend with your beloved guitars....
I remember having a cheap guitar when I was a little kid.. and over the period of 2 years of heavy use it really showed a reliced look but it was a relic that had substance and spoke history :)

Do you have any pictures of those worn and torn guitars?

I would love to see 'em.

Practice and patience, thats how a guitar gets to look like a relic. Not by taking your guitar to a belt sander and making believe its 30 years old when it came out of the box within the last year.

This is my old battle axe, 1974 Ibanez Les Paul Custom 2350. The guitar is stock except for a Seymour Duncan SH-4 Jeff Beck humbucker in the bridge position. This is one of the "lawsuit" Les Pauls, and I have owned it since 1981. It plays beautifully, and I will never part with it. The 1980's Strat is long gone. Oh well, sorry I sold it.

I care for my guitars. I spent good money on them and any dings, dents and scratches make me cringe. But thats me.

I never understood the "relic" fad. Yes, I'm calling it what is, a fad. It reminds of people who buy new jeans that are already faded and ripped for a higher price. It makes no sense.

Buying one new that "looks" old and beat is just cheating. To me, if you want a guitar that looks like it has been through the wars, you have two REAL choices:
1. Buy an new guitar and play the hell out of it.
2. Buy an used guitar and play the hell out of it.

We all know its not the destination that is important, its the journey.

That's a nice looking '70s Ibanez "Les Paul"

It doesn't look that reliced to me. I was expecting to see a lot of battle scars.

Sorry to hear about the abuse your guitars have received while gigging.
I try to make sure my guitars do not become a relic. It seems to me that the price/value of a relic guitar changes in direct relationship to whether I am the buyer or the seller. Go to buy a new relic guitar and I will have to pay a premium price. Go to sell a guitar that has a few scratches, dings, and play wear and no one wants to give a good decent price for it. Try to trade make a trade at a guitar store with a guitar that is less than mint they can insult you pretty quickly. I've come to the conclusion that a factory relic guitar will probably only benefit the manufacturer.

The photos of my Ibanez LP Custom don't show the finish that well, but believe me, it is what I call distressed. I don't feel bad by using a guitar for it's intended purpose, that is to make music that makes people happy!! They are just merely tools to get a job done. I also used that guitar instead of my Gibson LP Custom. My life has changed now that I am older. Not in a band right now, so there are few opportunities to play live shows. I spend more time writing, and recording demos at my home studio.
I kinda look at the old "Black Beauty" as a window back to a different time.
