Hello Karali,

I would not change the pickguard.
Maybe it's time to sell your '78 and get
a new 2008.

Cheers.

I agree with Mr Bill. Your '78 will very shortly qualify as "vintage" and will no doubt gain in value from that fact alone, regardless how people may feel about that.

If it's not giving you the sound you want then it is perfectly reasonable to want something different - but get it from a new guitar and sell this one to someone who wants it.

Of course, it's yours to do with exactly as you choose, however!

Cheers - C

Buy the new pickguard and electronics you want. Then remove the old pickguard/electronics as a unit and store it. That way you get the sound you want and, should you ever sell the guitar, you can honestly say that it's 100% original (provided you put the original stuff back on, of course).

I have a 77 Strat and I did just that.

Love,
Todd

I am old enough to remember when the Fender guitars from the 1970's were considered crap, and only pre-CBS Strats were worth anything. If it had a 3 bolt neck, it was junk! Am I the only one who remembers this???????
Oh, by the way, changing the pickguard will greatly improve not only your tone, but your sustain, and sexual prowess!!!!!

Not the only one.

Personally, I think that the american and japanese reissues are better than the original instruments...I remember that the countours of these Strats are almost non existent.

But you know, the vintagists will prove that they're excellent axes...

I bought my '77 Strat's new. I remember at the time that it was so unfair that I couldn't afford a REAL (re: pre-CBS) Strat. I went to Manny's and Sam Ash and Alex Music on 48th street. Manny's had the only Lefty strats and they were new. Across the street were the used instrument stores. I don't remember the prices but there were either no Lefty Strats older than about 1972 (which would have been "crap CBS Strats" anyway, or I couldn't afford any old enough Lefty strats.
Anyway, I bought a new natural/rosewood Strat. (Later I bought a black/maple Strat with almost the same S/N.)
I was disappointed at the time but....now I have 2 Vintage '77 Strats!

PS The black one is, in fact, crap. The natural - well, that's My Baby.

Love,
Todd
