Anyone hear of any rumblings or hints if there are any new models or mods to existig models? I'm thinking of getting a MIA standard but I always end up buying things the year before they change for the better.

Since the standard was just revised, do you guys thing it should be safe for the next couple years?

Just a question of curiousity, what was the last year the standard had the same bridge currently on the deluxe? I like that bridge alot so if I start looking at used ones at least i will know which years to look for.

at the moment the way the worlds economy is i wouldnt bet on anything staying the same. Buisiness's are going to be looking to drum up custom any way they can. I would just decide what you like and buy that one. The only ones that i cant see being replaced are the customshop vintage classics. I do predict prices for such guitars increasing though.

Better? That depends on what you think is better. For the last 50+ yrs they haven't made Fenders any "better", they just change little things here and there like new car models. Do you think one year will suck and another year will be so much better? It usually doesn't work quite like that.

For instance, I noticed the new strat have a very glossy neck finish. For me - that sucks. It makes too much friction for my hand and slows my playing. For others, they love the smoother feel since it makes them play faster.

So which is "better"?

To quote Ian "Dog nipples are better".

But dog nipples ARE better..... ......compared to rat nipples

I meant, things (many items, not just guitars) always seem to change the way 'I' would change them after I have already taken the plunge. As you said, better for me might be worse for you. I wasn't asking if any better mods were coming, just IF any mods are coming. I am just curious if people have heard any hints as to what might change in 2009 to help me decide WHEN to pull the trigger on a new strat.

Thanks. 8)

The Am Standard - or American Series as it was called till earlier this year - had the bridge you like into 2008. Mind you, it is not quite the same as on the Deluxe: the latter has a pop-in trem arm, for example (if I remember right). Am Series bridges with the block saddles and the previous trem block are still easily to be found as boxed aftermarket parts in guitar shops and online. Have a look around.

Regarding 2009: well, since it hasn't come out yet the new Eric Johnson sig Strat must be set for next year. That one will have some nice '60s style custom colors and a bound rosewood fingerboard - at least according to prerelease info we've seen. Possibly slightly different pickups, I don't recall?

My hope is that they will add the new model to the existing one rather than replacing it, because I think the current maple neck EJ is a true Fender classic, along with the EC and one or two others.

Cheers - C

Interesting, I was not aware of that. But I haven't bought one in about 10 years, so I can't compare cases. Come to think of it, I never even GOT a case when I got my 98 MIA. Bastards! Doesn't matter now. I had a calzone flight case for it anyway.

I have a gut feeling that there will still be some surprises at the winter NAMM show in California (January 15-18th) ?

For long time Fender people, how often do they change things up?

Every single year they change little things - just like car models. Whether it's colors, tuners, neck or body finishes, pickups, tone controls, logos - whatever.
