When you try to compare and rate artists, and all three of these guitarists are just that, It is like trying to compare apples, oranges, and peaches ... and then someone wants to add grapes.

I know I will draw fire for this. I am 64 (65 on the 19th of December) ... I met, worked the same chitlin' club (in Clearwater, Florida) as Jimmy James (Hendrix), got stoned with him, drank wine with him, and played guitar backstage with him. Jimi is not the only name guitarist I have been lucky enough to actually play with either on stage or in private, but I say this because, I have to rate Clapton above both Vaughn and Hendrix because of one thing ... versatility, and I mean both in playing ability and musical styles.

How many of you, by the way, know that Hendrix could actually do a great job of playing country music. He actually was a staff guitarist for the TV show "Hullabaloo" (I am not sure about that spelling).

Vaughn and Hendrix and Clapton are all giants. It is hard to tell the height of a giant from way down here close to the ground.

Some people play a guitar. Jeff Beck attacks one. At his best the sounds he coerces from his white Strat are criminally inventive, rude -- or in his words -- "slippery".

I nominate Jeff "Crazy Fingers" Beck. 8)

You want to see someone bend notes on a Strat just watch Buddy Guy. I am old enough to remember SRV doing his day and I just don't see all the hype he gets now when there are so many others who I think are better. It does help to have singature guitars out there with your name as to increase the image that this guy was one of the best. His music can be match by a lot of people I can think of.

If you want to see somebody bending on a Strat you should watch a certain Yngwie Malmsteen.

He bends two tones and half, from C to F, and his bendings are ALWAYS in tune, thing that cannot be said for SRV.

Another great bender is Brian May, but he doesn't play Strats that much.

I have a growing appreciation for Yngwie Malmsteen. Not only his bends are unbelievable, but the speed of his neo-classical style is just fabulous! God, I want fingers like his!

To all,

WELL - Eric, Jimi or Stevie - they all play great and can make an ax fly thru music....

At age 14 in Philly at the "Electric Factory" I saw Hendrix - he could play the guitar in so many positions and make the music flow.

At age 16 in Philly at the Elctric Factory" I saw Clayton with Cream
again a few years later with "Blind Faith"

years later - Derek and the Dominos and again Solo

SRV - I never had the privlege

I think Alvin Lee, Jimi Page, Dwayne Allman and Pete Townsend should be added to the last of Greats.

To all of you who don't understand why SRV is so special . . .
Have you failed to watch a live performance of SRV? I mean really!
I have never seen footage of any guitarist that could evoke as much passion and emotion as SRV. His guitar speaks and when it does it dictates in a way that will immediately draw your attention. Unfortunately in the recording studio this magic seemed very dim. Perhaps the audience is all he needed. He is what I call a true live performer. Some musicians do better for an audience than at rehearsal or home. I am by no means the musician these 3 strat cats are but I too perform better live. How about any of the rest of you? If you do you totally understand what I'm getting at.

For those of you who still don't get SRV I challenge you to watch SRV Live at Austin City Limits. Most especially Tightrope & Leave My Girl Alone. Then re-asess your statement & see if you can honestly say the same thing. I have never seen anyone pour so much heart & soul out on a guitar & that is why he is my personal favorite.
