If in sticking with the options listed in this poll, I would have to vote for SRV. Here's why. Yes, Jimi was invintive! He drew sounds out of a guitar that were unimaginable prior to his short career.

Here is where I follow bigjay's tain of logic for a second. Yes, SRV did Idolize Jimi to the point of obsession. However; IMO SRV played jimi soo much better than jimi did that its not even funny. Little wing and Voodoo chile (slight return) are prime examples of this. Albert King was also a huge influence on SRV. Is is also my opinion that SRV plays Albert King songs better than Albert King.

This brings me to Eric (how over hyped can one player be?) Clapton. There is noting about the mans style of play or tone that I find likable! I would go so far as to say that if Eric Clapton were to catch fire, I wouldnt even bother beat the flames out with John (2nd only to EC in over hypedness) Mayers narrow butt!

My $.02. YMMV!

someone said in order to compare you would have
to look at all three of them on the same song
well they have all done a little wing and hands down
far and away best version is the young man from Texas
in my opinion that is the culmination of electric guitar playing
and all students should attempt to learn his version for
the practice it gives you every guitar preformance techniuqe
imaginable hammer ons pull offs tapping soloing off of the Em
scale in three positions evry type of chord (open chords, barre E
and Em , barre A and Am shapes and how to empellish within
each of those chord shapes) he plays clean and then with heavy overdrive
he plays soft and subtle then all out raunchy Jazz like voicings blues
scales and downright rock and roll

now my favorite player is Eric Clapton cause I love his songs
and no single Guitarist contributed more to the advancement
or perception of what a guitar could be than Jimi Hendrix

but the question is who was better on the stratocaster
and from a technical standpoint no one , and I repeat no one
was more technically proficient on that instrument
than the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn

VOTE STEVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to vote Jimi on this one. His innovative nature still resonates into many genres. It's hard to vote for one over the other, but I have to go with the guy who did things that were just unimaginable for anyone else during his time period.

ok,read about three pages, and have to comment. so if anything im going to say was already said then disregard.
This is a Fender Guitar forum. The poll was whos the best guitarist?
well, hard to say...its all preference and personal opinion.

Hendrix is the biggest innovator of the electric guitar ever (my opinion)
Not only that but he wrote amazing songs.

SRV- Seems like he was always on fire, you cant be mad at him for so many people copying him..
he obviously kept the blues alive...look at all the wanna-be's Kws,mayer, davy knowles, etc. (my opinion).

Clapton-Well he's clapton...he has a 40-50 year career for a reason.

I respect everyone opinions, I personally think malmsteen is trash...and I may get stoned for this but I find EVH and Jimmy Page to be the most over-rated guitarist ever...both are great but I dont think theres anything special about them...just for the fact that zep tried to steal songs and call them there own rubs me the wrong way. Hey just my opinion though... 8)
theres been alot of greats....remember though, music is not a competition

I don't get this SRV thing at all. Probably the most overrated player of all time. A lot of noise. Difficult to watch. The paramont of overdone blues.

35 notes when 3 would do.

Ultimately, questions like this are just personal preference. Technically all three of these guys were are/very proficient. I do not think any one of them as better or worse. It's just that I never cared for Hendrix or SRV music and a lot of Clapton I don't care for either. But thats just me. there is no right or wrong .

There are a great number of stunning guitarsts out there that are never mentioned because they are not a part of the current guitar Zeitgeist of thought.

50 years form now thinking may be very different. Perhaps we can get past this silly Hendrix fixation.

Really, it comes down to personal preference.Alot of people would disagree with you.He took the Blues that most people had forgotten about (when most people were listening to hair metal or synth music ) and brought it back in the forefront. Not many people could have done that.He played alot of covers and took licks of others put his spin on them.I think his version of "little wing"is at least as good as the original. With blues its about feeling and soul and he sure did have that .He was also a great performer.JMO.

So who is you favourite guitarist? Doesn't have to be either of the three in the poll. I'm always interested when people say they don't like Hendrix or SRV or whoever... everyones tastes are different.

Bud,

Sorry, I just do not get him at all. There are some good passages, but by and large, to me, it's lacking because it's way-way-way overdone rock-a- bleu.

I don't get all the fruity clothes and zorro outfits either. Difficult to watch.

Not to take a way, technically, he was gifted.

But then, yes, it's all a matter of personal preference. But as i say above there are some great playes that no-one talks about because they were never promoted as well.

Voodoo,

That's really a difficult question to answer. In short I don't have "a" particular favorite. I gave up on that because everytime I try to think in those terms I find some new "old" player who I had never heard before. It gets harder and harder for me to make a pick.

But I don't want to leave you hanging so here are some that I listen to a great deal for blues : B.B. King, Freddie King, Elmore James, Ronnie Earl, Duane Allman, Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, John Lee Hooker.

Some Rory Gallager but he is a little like SRV it tends to be overdone. I will listen to Clapton blues also.

There are some others but I could go on.

I don't listen to a lot of Rock any more, I was a teen during the 70's, they don't make it like that any more, but much of it I am tired of listening to. heard it all too much. Getting old is hell.

But for RR guitar I like Ritchie Blackmore. The Purple years, I don't care for Rainbow. I do like his latest music a lot but then it's not RR at all, but more Renniassance.

Early Clapton will do, Cream etc. but not the pop stuff.
