How often do you change the strings?

Love,
Todd

I've used Pledge for the past 20+ years on all my guitars with no bad side effects at all. However, I don't use it on the strings. I used to use fast fret but found that it tended to gunk up my strings over time requiring me to change them more often. Now, I don't do anything special other than simply washing my hands before I begin playing and wiping the strings down with a soft cloth before and after playing.

I play so often that dust really doesn't get a chance to settle on any of my guitars. :)

Pledge may work as long as you don't have to do any repair work. Any product that contains silicone makes finish repair much more difficult. It can also make things kinda tacky to your hands.
I can't believe that Martin would recommend 3in1 oil for fretboards!!! Are you sure???

Ya, really, isn't 3in1 kinda heavy? And I would think that it could soak through the fretboard.

Love,
Todd

Yeah, I'm sure :)

I had the same reaction too. I was speaking directly with the guy at the C.F. Martin customer service to find out how to take care of it, after noticing some typical "use" after playing it for a couple of years. He said that if I couldn't get a hold of the Dr. Duck's, to use the 3 in 1. My jaw dropped. I swear to God though that is what the man said.

Guitar: wipe it off after each use with a shammy and occasionally polish it up with Dunlop 65.
Strings: change them when the go bad, you can try to clean them up but they never get their sound back once they go dead. For me that is maybe a new set once a month.

Once strings get dirty you can do anything you want...sing them a lullaby for all anyone cares...they won't get clean. Chemicals and cleaners, lemon oil, nothing really cleans them. Replace dirty strings. Once they're dirty, they loose their highs, and then feel horrible, and then the sustain goes.
Just change 'em! The frustration of trying to be cheap and clean them isn't worth the 5-8 bucks a set.

The guitar body is painted and laquered ash or alder usually. Any polish works, trick is don't use polish so often that it builds up on the guitar. Use plain old slightly wet (water) cloth once in a while to clean it. Wipe dry immediately. Doesn't hurt anything, and cleans without building up wax.

Brands of guitar wax? Whatever doesn't leave streaks. No magic here either.
