For my strings, I use Fast Fret, then spray the whole neck (front and back) with some Finger Ease, spray some Fender guitar polish on neck, take a 100% cotton cloth and wipe it down.for the rest of the guitar, i take the fender guitar polisher and spray on guitar and take the cloth and wipe it down. then use the dry part of cloth and dry guitar.

THANK YOU FENDER!!!! YOU ROCK!!!!!

It varies a bit from guitar to guitar--but in general I use Martin guitar polish--when it's needed.
Mostly between string changes I just wipe it with cotton flannelette.
I have some swirl remover as well for when that's needed.
I use lemon oil on the fingerboards (except for my bass which has a maple board)-but only once or twice a year.
I've used fast fret as well--but only when playing more than normal--or when it's dry.

I've never had any trouble with any of the above--but it can vary depending on the finish and the age & condition of the guitar.

I just wipe mine with a dry soft glove. I found fast fret builds up and causes excessive string noise when moving up and down the board.

Most times I just wipe them down but when I get one that reaily needs a cleaning I use Dunlop 65 Polish & Cleaner and on Rosewood, Ebony , Bubinga,Ect. fingerboards use Dr. Stringfellows Lem Oil thats a good board conditioner.

Hi Wackadoo, when It is possible I wash my hands before playing, to remove any acidity on them. When I'm done playing, I spray rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and using my thumbnail I run the towel under all the strings to remove any stuck debris, moisture or dead skin. Once clean, I spray finger ease on the strings and neck to protect them. Good luck.

Claude.

oh yeah also i wash my hands. if you dont (i learned the hard way years ago) it makes your strings rust, build up nasty gunk which make your tone terrible. it also makes it hard to play, reducing playability. the amount of oils your hands produce depends on how much gunk is put on and how long you need to wash

On my rosewood fretboard guitars I use orange glo on the fretboard with a dry cloth... then the back of the neck I clean with the fender mist and wipe bottle along with the other two bottles that come with the meguiars... for my strings I bought a bottle of Ernie Ball's strings cleaner... its really good because it really takes off all the dirt and sweat strings can have after playing... and that makes them last longer than normal :)

I suppose you have a hot wing bone slide?

Love,
Todd

PS Sounds like it should be a real slide, doesn't it?

call me crazy but i'm a voodoo chile:

use lemon oil on front and back of all maple neck (says not recommended but it feels so good) and once i crushed up strawberry leaves and ground them into the fretboard....it didnt' do much.

as far as string build up, its not too bad a problem. I change mine once a week so meh.

I am with jeffo46, I use the Fender by Meguiars 3 part setup. I have restored some pretty bad looking finishes with the polish and conditioner, swirl and haze remover and mist and wipe finish enhancer. Truly good stuff, and since it is sold by Fender, it must have their seal of approval. I have also used Dunlop #65 polish and cleaner with good results.
As far as the fretboard goes, Rosewood and ebony get Gibson Luthiers choice fretboard conditioner. It really makes for a silky smooth feel, not greasy or slimy, but nice. Maple, I use the Fender polish, with good results. Many folks use lemon oil, but I don't.
A nice fret polish with oooo steel wool, and one of the products just mentioned provide really nice and smooth fretboards for my guitars.
As far as string cleaning, I use a soft cotton bandana after each playing, and try to keep everything clean. I have heard of a Blitz cloth, but have no expereince with it to clean strings.

i think the acidity of lemon oil eats at the finish slightly, but I'm not sure.

I borrowed some techniques that I use on my Martin.

Martin, for the ebony fingerboard, recommended Dr. Duck's Axe Wax or (believe it or not) 3in1 oil. The Dr. Duck's seems to do the trick on ebony or rosewood. If the strings are looking nasty or leaving black marks on my fingers, I run a string cleaning cloth supplied by Elderly Music to get rid of the tarnish. Other than that, I leave things alone.

Oh yeah... I use the Fender cleaning kit on the body and back of the neck.
