I have a Mayer (Cypress Mica) and also have similar problems.

The neck-relief (bow) was fine when I bought it, the action a bit too high (even according to Fenders online set-up guide) and it still buzzed from 15th fret and up. I set it up as well as I could (I'm not a professional tech) and gave it a slight neck-shim. It helped, but it's still not 100%.

Another weird problem is that the low E is impossible to intonate.
I can't get the string saddle backwards enough (even if I took the spring off to make more space). Any one else has this problem?

Cheers,
Martin

Hi markvoll, welcome to the Forum.

Out of curiosity, which end of the neck pocket did you shim, please?

On the low E thing, try taking some snips or a junior hack saw and taking a quarter of the saddle spring's length off it. May just give you that crucial extra mil of play to get that saddle back far enough.

Cheers - C

EDIT: Oh, sorry, just reread your post and see you already tried it without the spring entirely. So scratch what I just wrote...

Here are a couple of things to check: 1) are the pickups too close to the strings? 2) is the bridge floating too high off of the body? (it should only be about 1/8 inch from the back of the bridge to the body)
