Hey guys, I just bought a John Mayer signature Stratocaster 2 days ago, I chose it over the American Deluxe Strat cause of the great blues tone. But most of my guitar experience has been with other guitars that have humbuckers and I'm not used to getting a ton of hiss & hum when I use mild distortion. So I was wondering if there is a way to get rid of this hum without using a gate cause gates cut your sustain down dramatically? Or would it have been better to go with the American Deluxe seeing that it has Colbalt Noisless..?

Try changing the height of your pups. That might help cancel some of the hum.

But i think that will also affect the tone of the guitar. I'm trying to get rid of hum without changing the tone so much..

You can shield the inside of the pickup cavity and back of the pickguard with copper sheets or foil and connect that to ground and that will get rid of a lot of hum and won't affect your tone.

Like just spread it all over the cavity? What do you mean by ground though, should it also be wrapped around the wires?

imagine the copper foil as a shield blocking magnetic waves. you wanna surround it as much as you can, but dont go crazy. then you solder a wire from the copper foil to the grounding somewhere.

also, its a good idea to make sure all your equipment is plugged into an outlet that has a good earth ground, that will help reduce noise some if it isnt on one.

There should be two wires going to the output jack of your guitar. The black one is a connection to ground. Or you can connect to the back of one of the pots. They are grounded also. There is no need to wrap the foil around the wires.

I play the JM strat as well and I dont get very much hum/hiss at all it could be any number of things. It could be your cable, a more expensive or high end cable will have less hiss. It could be your amp, you could try setting the tone levels different. you could try playing on the 2nd or 4th pickup positions. OR if youre really serious you could get a Ibanez Ts-808 Tube Screamer. It is a fantastic overdrive pedal that will give you lots of overdrive without hiss.

I see lol. Might be my cable. I must admit that my amp is somewhat noisy sometimes even with a humbucker guitar. Thank you for the suggestions
