I love the look of Kluson vintage style tuners but I was wondering about everyone elses opinion of them. I am torn between Schaller locking tuners which are the same as what I have on my MIA Deluxe or the vintage style tuners that I see on the Artist models such as the SRV ,Buddy Guy and John Mayer models. Looks aside, I know the Schallers are excellent tuners but my experience with vintage tuners have been split between high end Klusons and low end knockoffs. The difference is night and day.

My question is this. Will vintage style tuners drop into my new MIM FSR Stratocaster like the schallers will. I know I would have to drill :x holes but im not sure about the shaft spacing and size of the holes or whether i would need to buy more bushings. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The "slotted" tuners are great. You don't have any pointy string ends sticking out. Neater and safer for the fingers.

I'm surprised with the results. From the few people in the know that I talk to, they're thoughts are the vintage are good from the 'vintage' point of view, but for functionality the newer ones, especially the locking are better. I dont know myself, I've only owned Schaller locking on the Fender I owned. I liked it because I changed my strings at least once a week, especially when I was laid up for 6 months, (I averaged 12 hours a day durning that time) and the locking were sooooo good for changing strings. I could do the whole string change, including stretching them out and retuning in under 5 minutes, plus I never had to have extra string coming out. Like I said though, I have no experience with the vintage.

That's their plus. I can't understand why other manufacturers used this concept.

Must have vintage tuners on a vintage spec guitar.

But on a modern type Strat? Those locking Schallers take some beating. The locking staggered Sperzels are probably just as good (I have them on one Strat), but I think the knurled knob on the Schallers' locking mechanism is probably a little kinder on the fingers - and they just look the best!

Vintage spec tuners usually fit an 11/32 hole in the peghead. If your headstock is drilled for modern tuners then its holes will likely be 13/32, often refered to as 10 mm. In that case to fit vintage tuners on the larger holes you need a set of "conversion bushings". They are easy to find from the usual online suppliers - I can help if you have trouble locating them.

Good luck - C

I have an EC strat and they come with the Klusons. I had never used them before but I love them. I love that they make for a neat restring but it may take a little longer & you do need to pre-cut the strings. However they have a 15:1 gear ratio which allows some serious fine tuning and coupled with the rest of the guitar's construction and proper string stretching the guitar holds its tuning better than any other guitar I have by far.
