well...it doesnt look like a 72 strat because it doesnt have the big headstock with stratocaster in big letters unless someone greatly modified it. but who would do such a thing to something so priceless?!

Well, like Martian said, someone may have sanded off the original decal and, somewhere along the line, someone else added one (one that's not quite right for the time period).

Sorrowed has not told us what modifications were made to the guitar. I wonder what the seller told him about this so-called 1972?

Tore into it tonight needed strings anyway....the butt definitly has 22 nov 72 which reading from the link on the fenders should be an 8 digit code<RIGHT??> 0n the end of it..the machine heads read FENDER and not the "F" as is supposed to so somewhere down the line its had definite mods. I acqiored it from a guy next town over and am thinking its a different vintage body with a 72 neck , has knobs that match for an older model Has 4 bolt plate in back with ability to adjust the neck on the body with the truss rod protruding in the headstock for adjustments as well...its a FRANKENSTEIN but them agin so was Gilmours blackie...histor shows he had warfed it so MANY times...plays great so I guess thats as far as Ill go... it'll never see a stage :(

starting to look yapanese to me

Neck dates like that were used until March 1973.

However, a 1972 neck with a bullet truss rod would be a three-bolt neck plate with micro tilt adjuster and a different logo decal.

Did you make note of any pot codes? Or codes on the pickups?

Did you take any pictures of the routing, etc?
