What is it supposed to be? A real 1972 strat should look like this:

A genuine '72 for $500? Unless it's falling to pieces in your hand that's gotta be a great deal!

Now it really deserves a better amp... I expect you'll be picking up a '60s Plexi for a couple of bills.

Welcome to the Forum.

Cheers - C

Welcome Sorrowed!

I hate to be brutally frank but that doesn't look like any '72 I've ever seen unless its been heavily, heavily modified.

Who modifies a Strat by changing the headstock decal?

$500 isn't bad for a 1970s Japanese copy made to appear to be a Fender.

Belatedly, Ceri spots what the others are talking about.

Hmm, maybe the seller knew a good price when he got one after all...

I love the '70s Strats (there I said it). I've lived with them for a long (long) time. So I can spot one a kilometer away!

They didn't originally come with pearl pickguards, sorry.

I've seen many knuckleheads who weren't satisfied to just sand the body, they had to go after the headstock too because they had some notion about refinishing both in the same matching color. Down the road, they or the next owner(s) come to realize the negative impact of that missing decal.

Orvilleowner, when did the five-way switch come in as standard, do you remember?

Not that I care especially. I just want to be there when you make your 2500th post!

Don't keep us waiting, now...

Oh, gosh, Yes, I hit 2500 posts! Pop the bubbly, boys!

The 5-way appeared in 1977.

Back to the guitar in question: I'd have to see close up pictures of the bridge, neck plate, base of the neck, the body routing, and underneath the pickguard before I believe that that's a '70s Fender. And who cares what I believe anyway!

Sorrowed,
Just enjoy the guitar mate. Whether it be a 72, 62 or a shoe box with a elastic band around it, it matters not.
Having fun is what its all about :)

Go to http://www.gbase.com and enter "1972 strat" to see examples. Often you can find detailed pictures -- hopefully your parts might match up.

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html is a good source of Info re: vintage Fenders.
