Last Friday I went to Guitar Center just to browse and checkout a tele thinline re-issue when I can across a FSR Standard HSS Strat in Sienna Sunburst. I immediately wanted it but thining that the Blackfriday Sale at GC the following friday would save me 15% off of a $449 guitar would be sweet. Needles to say the 28th came and I went to GC and the price had been marked up to $499 so that even afer the 15% you would end up only saving a few bucks literally. Talk about a let down.

That's how alot of guitar shops say "Fender, or Gibson" guitars 40% off. Firstly, they go off MSRP, which on an American Standard is like $1400 or something like that, even though most of us know they're really $995-$999, so they take it off the top. Welcome to retail, dont bend over on your way through the door.

The guitars list price is usually (minus extra dealer discounts...free freight, etc...) double the price of the cost. So a $1400 list is a $700 cost. Again, this doesn't take in account the cost of keeping the stores lights on, etc...

So, if you do get 40% off on a guitar, you are getting a very good deal.

But basically my point is manufacturers MSRP, is usually a mute point. If it says $1500, but every store sells it for their normal price of $1000, than it's a $1000 guitar. Believe me, I have no problem with profits, these places aren't in the charity business, what I have issue with is if you can go to a store and buy something for $1000 51 weeks a year, then they say 20%off, but raise that $1000 price first, although it isnt unethical, it's just kind of.....mildly deceptive. But, like everyone knows, a good deal is whatever a buyer considers is a good deal, it's a very relative concept. I actually am more than willing to spend a little more to buy something if I feel I'm getting something in return, such as better service, more professional transactions, or even helping a smaller store stay in business. I think in the world of internet searches of pricing, people forget that.

well i just bought my first strat on black friday, got the american deluxe strat, great guitar

now ive bought i think 3 or 4 guitars from guitar center, although im not a big fan of the place, i have only bought one off the racks. i just prefer one out of the box and then set up properly

and this is weird and i did not think they would do this but...
i played the am deluxe and just fell in love with it i said i would buy a strat once david gilmour had a sig one.... well i cant afford it but i said i would buy a strat.

so i wanted the oly white with rosewood neck but they did not have it and had to order it for me, they said i would not recieve it untill jan sometime i figured since id get the 15% off i might as well do it but before i agreed the clerk said if i would do it he would let me take the 3tone sunburst home untill they got mine in.....

so i did. i never thought they could do something like that its another reason i dont buy them off the racks who knows who wailed on it
i have maybe played it 3 times lightly because i know when i return it there just going to try to sell it again. ive just never heard of a guitar shop doing that with an expensive guitar

wow long rant... just thought that was weird
cant wait to get mine great guitar, great forum too good info

They did that with me too, I was waiting for a V neck american deluxe, they let me take a c neck home, after a week, I decided to keep the one I took home. I trust them way more than anyone on ebay for reasons stated in another thread.

Isn't that something? I just got back from Long & McQuade where my 11 year old has been fondling a guitar for several weeks, (sorry Fender, he seems to like this one more that "our" Strat). The price on the same guitar went from $585 last week to $690 today....just as we close in on Christmas!

My son was choked. I was choked! I'll look around, I guess, but I sure don't feel like giving them my money.

I tried to on Black Friday. I went to mine asking them to honor the GC 15% off. They told me their prices were already discounted. Ummm, yeah ... but not as much as "that other store". Yes, "that other store" got my money that day.

Good news! Just to set the record straight, I went back to L&Q to talk to the manager in the hope that he would relent. He was quite the hardass and told me "his" version of world economy etc. etc. as well as all the reasons he couldn't put the price back 2 days. I dug in my heels and I must say, did a pretty good job of browbeating the poor guy until he finally gave in - yay! So...
Long & McQuade does have a heart, (as all music stores should.)

My son will have the best Christmas ever!!

:D :D Gridlok :D :D
