Last Friday I went to Guitar Center just to browse and checkout a tele thinline re-issue when I can across a FSR Standard HSS Strat in Sienna Sunburst. I immediately wanted it but thining that the Blackfriday Sale at GC the following friday would save me 15% off of a $449 guitar would be sweet. Needles to say the 28th came and I went to GC and the price had been marked up to $499 so that even afer the 15% you would end up only saving a few bucks literally. Talk about a let down.

One thing to keep in mind about Guitar Center and most other stores that also maintain a website is that they will almost always match the prices on their website if it is lower than in the store. I ran into this last month at a local GC when looking for a gig bag. Had them get online and they matched the price...weren't too thrilled, but they did.

Guess Music stores are getting more like Jewelery or Furniture stores...15% off what price?

Yeah; I know about the online price matching but since the item is an FSR, it isnt even on the website yet. it may never be on there depending on whether or not it was only released to sell in this particular region. Otherwise, I would have pulled it up on my blackberry if thats what it took. LOL

Went into GC Friday armed with my 15% off coupon looking for Sibelius G7 software. They didn't have it. Then I looked for the Audio-Technica headphones I'd been researching. They didn't have them, either.

On my way out, I noticed they had Ibanez Tube Screamers on sale for $89. Mine had died two years earlier and I've wanted to replace it. Got the 15% off, too. :)

Guitar Center is the Wal Mart of musical instruments. Everybody loved it in the beginning. Then the stores lost the focus and the customer experience wasn't a priority. In some of the stores I've been in it's not even on the radar.

Hold out for that Sibelius software, Steve. That's the best of its kind that I've ever seen. Mind you, I'm still on the 3.0 edition...

Cheers - C

Black Friday came and went and I didn't buy anything.

Today (dark grey Saturday(?)) I bought a couple Fender straps (one with blue colors in it to match my doubleneck) and a 1975 Greenslade LP (at a local used record store).

Yes, I've researched a few notation software packages and the G7 does what I need it to do (produce lead sheets mostly) at a good price . . . but I have to focus on buying presents for other people now. After the holidays I'll work on the home studio again.

I had problems with the Black Firiday on-line coupons with GC, MF, and Sam Ash. I ended up having to call in my order. It was a little too much work, but the git is en route...

RAIN CHECK,,RAIN CHECK,,RAIN CHECK..and get to know the manager well. Forget the 'doofus' sales staff.

(I can probably move more Strats just hanging around the place for an hour than the sales staff does all day. Particularly with parents who don't know what they are looking for.)

What kind of guitar?

I went into Music Machine on Saturday (they are one of the big internet Fender dealers who first commissioned the Thin Skin vintage reissues), but I wasn't tempted to buy any guitars.

What you've just experienced is how retail works unfortunately. Ive been on the other side of this, working at car dealers during these "slashed price" sales, its scummy, and I hate it. The businesses where this is most common is in jewelry, and furniture. I worked as a furniture salesman for a year, you wouldnt believe the mark up, upwards around the neighborhood of 300%. This stuck in my mind when I went back to cars. People would haggle over the 3-6% mark up in autos. I would always try to convey that people have no problem buying a necklace or sofa for full price, but they want $4000 off a $18000 car. What really got me was Tiffany's. I bought a girlfriend one of those stupid sterling silver chokers, she wanted one for her birthday, and I thought "its a silver cheap chain with a heart, how much could it be?" IT WAS $275!!!. I couldnt believe it, but what really got me was one of my friends sister was a buyer for Tiffany's, she told me those chains cost Tiffany's $26, that's over 1000%. Anyway, when you see those "Kays jewelers" 70% off sales, they ALWAYS mark them up before marking them down. That's how alot of guitar shops say "Fender, or Gibson" guitars 40% off. Firstly, they go off MSRP, which on an American Standard is like $1400 or something like that, even though most of us know they're really $995-$999, so they take it off the top. Welcome to retail, dont bend over on your way through the door.

I'm waiting for something back on this scenario you've related. If it's worthwhile, I'll share it.

The recommendation is to seize the day, and ask for a 30 day price guarantee. It is possible that the guitar was incorrectly priced, or actually did experience a price increase.
