Hi, I have a custom strat that I put together. I have the Fender S1 switching and all 3 SCN pickups. After getting everything installed I am hearing a definite vibrato or almost trem sound from these pickups. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be a bad capacitor? Do all of these pickups do this?

weird one that mate. Scns are not too prone to magnetic pull although i wouldnt rule it out. Do they do it set low? If so then its a wiring hicup. Have you tried em with a normal vol pot to make sure its not the pickups themselves? All i can think to do after that is to go across the circuit with a meter. :?

Perhaps you have the pickups too high --- too close to the strings.

Lower them (a lot) and see if that effect goes away.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried to lower the pickups all the way to the pickguard but it is still there. It's like a pulse sound. I used a orange drop capacitor do you think that could cause that?

not unless its severly faulty, the wrong type, or miswired. Get the tester round the circuit mate, thats my only solution.

Hmmm....sounds tricky. But i doubt its the height of the pick ups would cause the trem/vibrato sound.
I separate the pick guard from the body and remove the grounding from the trem claw and body that is grounded to the pots(i believe)...now with just the pick guard alone plug in your input cable and try....is it still there?

I know it's a bit basic - but we're certain it's the guitar and not the amp are we? Or a pedal?

Or interference from some nearby electrical source? Drag your rig into another room and see if the sound is still there.

It just makes sense to eliminate the silly possibilities before laboriously switching out bits of circuitry..

Good luck - C

I saw your post in another forum here and commented on it there. I've posted it here too for your convenience:

SCNs do not come with a built in vibrato/tremolo so you can rule that out.

If it starts within 30 seconds or so after plugging in, it may be the capacitor. If it does it all the time, I'd suspect a weak connection where the vibration of the strings is actually vibrating the weak connection, thus making it even weaker. A pot could be burned up too which could give you the same symptoms.
