I've no experience with spiders, but i ran a pod through solidstate and valve poweramps for a while. What i liked about it were the clean sounds, line6 excelled emselves on the clean settings although there a tad quiet. The gain settings were not so good far too fizzy and bassy. I think it was a tradeoff in sounds. They couldnt emulate the wall of sound you get from a cranked driven amp so they made the driven pre-amp settings louder. It was good for live stuff though. No one in the audience could tell the difference. What i didnt like about using a valve poweramp with it was that all the delicate parts of a traditional valveamp are still there. I still had to wait for the poweramp to cool down before i could move it. I went onto using a solidstate marshall 8080 poweramp and it worked a treat. Great live sound and easy transportation. One of my old bandmembers had a flextone, that had some good sounds in it too.

Try one! They're not a bad amp at all. I'd recommend the head; not because of the higher wattage (although you'll appreciate it when you play a larger venue, or outside), but the head will give you the flexibility to choose a cab to your liking. That said, the biggest issue I had with the HD 100 was that volume levels among the patches were inconsistent, requiring some tweaking to get it to playable condition.
