I have several Strats that I only use a single pickup in it. I am wanting to go with a double Humbucker configuration, but am having second thoughts about whacking out the existing wood in the pickup cavity to accomidate the neck Humbucker. I know I could find a swimming pool routed body, but I already have several bodies that I wanna work with. Has anyone ever chopped the wood in the cavity and if so did it change the tone much? The body I am doing this on is an Ash body so it is a heavier body. Thanks for any help on this matter, Peace!!

You will never notice a tone difference from doing that

I agree. It will change the sound a bit, but twisting the tone controls on your amp or guitar will change it significantly more.

No, it won't change the tone but the resale value of the instrument! :D

Do you know how to use a router? If so, then completely easy to run up the right template and get digging.

But if you have not used a router before - don't start learning on your guitar body! Do a good bit of practicing on scrap wood first. Those machines can spring surprises on you if you are not ready for them. We've all found ourselves crawling around on the floor searching for that inch square chunk of wood the router tore out of our prized piece of work, prior to trying to glue it back in...

Of course, you may be planning to do the deed with chisels. Then respect to you...

Good luck - C

You got that right and one thing many who have not used one could find out is that more people get hurt with routers every year then any other power hand tool.

Yikes - yes, I've a nasty idea that's right. I've never hurt myself with my router yet - quick, touch wood, or throw salt over the shoulder, or something!

Take care! - C

Thanks for all the info!!!! I have used a router, but only on small projects, not guitar related, so I have a slight knowledge on how to work with it. I will post some pics of before and after, although its gonna be a slow process as I am laid up from 4 disk injuries in my back so I can only do short spurts of work at a time. Thanks again for the info!!!!!
