Out of those 4 places, one of them has a selection of strats, (or Les Pauls) that had the original crap pickups gutted, and replaced with an assortment of popular pickup choices, i.e, Hotrails, Tonezones, Texas Specials, etc. Which store do you think you'd go to?

Wow CRAP pickups! That statement could get you a world of hate from some of the "Mystical Fender single coil sound" guys who post here :D

I happen to agree with you that aftermarket pickups are superior to stock pickups though. 8)

I'm referring to the stock pickups they put in squire's. The no-name generic ones, not the ones you get in stock Fenders. I actually love the single coils, but the ones you get in $100 Squire bullet's, basically just give the strings sound through the amps.

You got that right. I guess they are okay for the intended purpose as an entry level student guitar. It just surprises me how many people buy them expecting them to be more than they are.

The Fender strat has been a guitar that all have yearned for. For "that sound, playability" However not everyone is the same. The Strat can only offer so much as a basic single coil guitar. Sometimes people need to branch out from the norm to find their sound. There is no correct pickup, no correct neck and no correct guitar. There is just what is the closest to what you want at that particular point in time. My advice would be to go to a guitar store and play a fender with Dimarzio dual rail pickups. There is a signature model I beleive. In my opinion if you want a fatter sound with less high end, do it, if you want that same sweet sparkly tone from an American Standard's pickups without the hum look into the deluxe model's noiseless pickups. (Dont waste your time with EMG, or Seymour duncan) They are just trying to copy what fender did 60 years ago...

I've never heard a hotrails pickup, that I know of. How are they compared to a humbucker?? Are there any sites that you can listen to streaming audio to get an idea how one pickup compares to another? I see some once in a while, but they always seem to be playing something completely different for each one. It would be easier to compare of they play the same riff each time, as opposed to hearing them play one for one pickup, then something completely different for another.
( If you ever listen to Iron Maiden) You can hear
Dave Murray all over the songs. He uses Hot rails exclusively on his Strats with Floyd rose trems. And they sound nothing short of stellar. Hope this helps. pskemster
