I live in Manhattan. All the pawn shops have crap guitars and the stors on 48th street have really good prices anyway. So, I went to visit my Dad in Idaho a few years ago and got the brilliant idea to go into town and check out the pawn shops there - big city slicker that I am.
Guess what? All the guitars were crap guitars. Oh well.

Love,
Todd

I live between Baltimore and Washington so I can head in either direction and find the pawn shop and yes they do have a lot of junk but you can find some nice ones if you keep on looking. I am looking for deals anywhere I can. My favorite is going to auctions and estate sales.

Mine wasnt a junkshop find, it was a guitarshop that sells gibbos, tokai lots of pedals and amps. The bloke just hadnt priced it right. I've been a trawler of junkshops for a few years now (mainly for books). Sad to say the bottom has gone out of it regards guitars. I remember a time when you'd regularly find real gems particularly pedalwise. Now that times gone, the market has been bought up and its too easy for people with no experience to find correct prices. The best junk shops are in the slums though, dont even consider looking around chelsea or kensington. Derby and nottingham have some good shops if your around that end.

And the reason for that goes back to my initial complaint about ebay, that's the first place they go to get an idea of what something costs.... Which means pawnshops will start trying to rape their shoppers, instead of just their sellers.

All the pawn shops around where I live sells crap or sell things at prices you'd pay for a new one. Glad to hear you got a good deal. Enjoy it.

We have quite a few pawn shops in South Florida (go figure). I've hit a bunch of them and never found anything worth buying. Everytime I entered a shop I was filled with anticipation hoping to find a diamond in the rough or some undiscovered treasure only to be put off by the condition or price.

I have a friend who bought a coat in a charity shop and found £50 in the pocket. I thought they took measures to prevent that sort of thing!

The same friend also worked as a road sweeper for a while. He went to sweep up a cigarette packet and realised there was something heavy inside. Turned out to be a vintage Rolex watch. How did that happen? He was narked because when he sent it to Rolex to get the scratched glass replaced it cost him a lot more than a "normal" watch.

These are true stories: I kid you not!

Nothing like that has ever happened to me, though...

Cheers - C

I guess I'll take a peek into the shops from time to time . . . just in case. But I'm not looking for anything specific right now. Now, I'm debating whether I should make another investment to upgrade the home studio given that I've already spent much more than my meager talent is worth.

I think the shops down here are visited by working musicians (or music shop owners) on a routine basis. I've never had lightning strike so I simply stopped going.
.
Congrats on your find. Wish I shared some of your luck.

Hey Stratsman,
My find was at a pawnshop on the east coast of south Florida. I think you're right about the pros and owners combing the shops though.
Thanks for the reply

Nice find. I picked up a Blues Jr. for $250 Cdn in a similar shop (Where I work, so I get to jump on all the choice gear :-) My best find, though, is a mid 60's Traynor YBA-2 6V6 model that I paid $25 for because it didn't work. Speaker was punched, my tech happened to have the correct vintage Jensen, new power tubes, new know and pilot light, $180 and good to go. My tech offered to buy it from me when I went to pick it up. Unfortunately for him, I wanted to hear it first. That amp isn't going anywhere...
