It is. If you want a 1 watt then look to sheldon amps be warned they are extremely expensive boutique amps

these retail between £750-£950 3 watts switchable to 1 watt, sound tremendous and the red one looks like satans handbag. Dont be fooled by ther lack of controls. Ive spent loads of time playing em and can tell you every sound you want is in there.

I've never tried a really low watt amp like that. Does it allow you to get that breakup you get on tube amps that are really overdriven at reasonable enough volume?? Im figuring if they do, they'd be great for home recording. A friend of mine started playing a year or so ago, and really like my Princeton reverb. But he doesnt know that bigger isn't always better. He emailed me the other day, and told me he finally got a tube amp. I don't know exactly what it is, but he told me its 60 watts, thinking it would be great. I told him what he got is basically like getting a jet engine for a golf cart, its going to be be way too much for what he wants to do. The thing must be ridiculously loud.

With the smaller tube amps, you do get that sweet spot of break up without having the blast the volume to a club level, which is a great thing, but....

60-watts is not like 60x louder than a 1 watt, that's not how it works.

A 15-25 watt, good quality all tube amp, is fine for practicing or gigging. A 150 watt Triple Rectifier is not 3x louder than a 50 watt Single Rec. You just get more headroom for cleans bascially. But since 30 or 50 is fine for any applications, it's just stupid to even bother with a Triple Rec, and it makes me laugh when I see kids trying to haul those around, and then turn them up to maybe 2 on the volume when they gig.

And, a small combo can (and is a lot of times) used in all kinds of gigs. When you play a large venue, arena, etc - you'll be mic'ing everyone anyway just to mix the sound better. So there is really never any need at all to have anything better or more. Unless you plan on playing to a 1000+ crowd with no mixing of the band. At that point, your amp alone might project that distance and keep a good tone, but your band's mix to the crowd will be pretty crummy, which defeats the purpose of everything anyway.

I hear you, but he's playing in a living room, if my 15 watt is too loud to play at its optimum level for breakup, a 60 watt is going to be way too loud. Thats all im saying

Small amps are great for recording, small speakers aren't. It is the one letdown on the vibrochamp. You cant record a 100watt amp and get a great sound at full volume. the mikes are way overloaded.
Dgonz is right on the volume point 35 watts is about half the perceivable volume of a 100 watt amp whilst 15 watts is about half a 50watt. 100 watts isnt twice the power of a 50 watt but aside from clean headroom does have better sound projection. In other words it will still sound like 100watts at the back of a big room full of people where a 50 watt wont.
100 watt amps do have their uses live, i gig 2 jcm800's both set at about 6 without adverse effects to anything. The most i've ever heard from a soundman is can you lower the bass set amp by a notch or raise the treble set one, or vice versa. As with all gear its how you use it.

A link to my last band. Guitars recorded with a mixture of 5 watt practice amps, 100 watt stacks and straight into the board. Can you tell which was which?

Dont contact me through this link, i quit the band 2 odd years ago.

Have you guys played through that new (but looks old) Fender Champion 600 5watt amp Guitar Player reviewed last month? They say it sounds cool. It costs $200 at Sam Ash here in NYC. I live in an apartment so I'm interested.

Love,
Todd

As I recall, there was a forum member called "timp" I think it was who bought one thinking it would break up at low volume. He reported that it didn't. He and I had the same problem as you probably do -- we lived in close quarters and we wanted a good crunchy tone but didn't want to disturb the neighbors. There should be a few threads on the Modern Amps forum that address this subject.

In fact I found the one I was referring to:

thanks for all the quick responses guys!
After considering what you all said, i think i'm going just going to stick with the vibro champ because of how bersatile and allthe great tones i can get with it. I might just try switching strings from the 9's that came with my strat to something bigger like 10's or 11's.

i was just wondering from anyone who has played a vibro champ whats your favorite settings are for blues or how you get a santana-like tone (if thats possible) or if anyone has been able to get a robby kreiger-like sound and how. Thanks!

you need a tremolo pedal or a delay pedal for kreiger sounds. I'd look at the champ or bassman settings for kreiger (1 or 2) and the hotrod sounds for santana (10,11) If you get a trem pedal you can use the amps delay or if you get a delay pedal use the amps tremolo.

I don't do much in the way of Doors tunes, but for playing Blues on the VCXD I like the #2 and #3 Tweed settings with some reverb and a touch of delay. The Hot Rods are good, too.

Thank you. I'm gonna go back to play the amp. It seems like a good amp but...get a good one.
And get a Boss BD-2 and consider upgrading the speaker. I'll look for that.

Love,
Todd
