I've read stories where people (in this case Eric Clapton I believe, in a history of Fender book) were only able to re-fret their guitars like once, maybe twice, then the fretboard gets to a point that it just wont take a re-fretting.

Also, would it just be easier to put a new fretboard on a neck instead of replacing the whole neck. Obviously this would be on necks that have a separate fretboard. Then if you really like your neck, you wouldn't have to replace it.

yes stevie ray had the same problem with his number one strat. The original slab neck couldn't handle another re-fret so they put on a different one. After he passed, rest his soul, the original slab neck was put back on.

It might have been SRV I was thinking about, not Clapton, that story sounds like the one I was thinking about.

A fret job can cost as much as buying a new (used) neck. Replacing the fretboard itself would cost even more (without any guarantee that the result would be as good as the original prized neck).

If it's a vintage guitar, I would pay for the refretting, but if it's a newer model, I would just buy a new neck when the frets got too worn to take another leveling & crowning.

A good luthier (I mean a GOOD one) could always refret a guitar .... they can fill the slots and cut new ones if necessary (like if they get too wide) ... there are frets with wider tangs too, plenty of options for a good luthier.

If SRV's or Clapton's tech brought the necks in question to Dan Erlewine, for example, he'd fix 'em right up, good as new! I am positive of that.
