certaily in the uk relics arent too popular, from what i can gather. Of the 3 people i know that collect CS guitars non of them own relics, but their into it for the tones not the image.
British shops are not selling them at the same $ to £ rate at which they sell NOS guitars either. This last month i've seen relics for sale for £1800 odd where NOS go for £2000+.
The time of the relic isnt over but i think people are cottoning on to the fact that for the money they may as well have a pristine guitar.

All i can find on them is the joe strummer tele. I'm equally confused. I keep seeing references to them and a imminent release at namm 09 but nothing reliable enough to take to the bank

I would think that zZounds is a pretty reliable source! I believe zZounds thought they were going to be able to sell these, but they were discontinued before they even came out.

That makes me wonder what Fender did with the finished materials that were going to be used for this line and did they make many and are they siitting somewhere to be released as somethine else?

But have you actually seen any mexican relics? Your talking about high end expensive american guitars, the road worn are mexican made low cost guitars.

I've only ever seen the joe strummer tele thats said to be roadworn. My point on CS guitars was valid Iceman, why are NOS fetching more than Relic's? I can only assume its because relics aren't selling to expected levels. It also points us towards the answer for 'wheres the roadworn?' If their not selling as well as expected on highend guitars why would you put the expense of making them into a mid range line?

My point is the MIM "road worns" arent released yet, not in the US anyway, rumor mill has it they will be at the winter NAMM show. Your earlier post said they had come and gone, My response to your zzounds link was its likely a premature listing and theyby been pulled. Just trying to get clarification if some had been floating around your area, it kinda sounded that way from your posts.

They'll be released in the US first of all if anywhere, thats the biggest guitar market. Yknow Iceman, that ZZsounds sales pitch could be premature, i havent seen any other ads for them. They will certainly be a interesting guitar to investigate. Is the relicing identical from guitar to guitar? What are the standards of the relic'd hardware? etc.

relic'd ain't nothing but a BRILLIANT marketing ploy to sell goods that were damaged in the build process. I hope someone got a big bonus for coming up with that idea.

Marketing Guy: "Hey, don't bother refinishing that body that got chipped. Bang it up some more and we'll sell it as a 'special relic edition' and charge more for it"
Department Head: "BRILLIANT!"

and sadly, there are guys out there that fell for the ploy. :(

I'm not hearing any rumors, but that's how I see the situation.

Yeah, ain't it great!

And this sure sounds like the Fender marketing department:

Quote:
Like classic cars or your favorite T-shirt, some things just get cooler with age. It's especially true of electric guitars--they develop an unmistakable mojo over time that only makes 'em look even cooler and feel even more comfortable than when they were brand- new. That said, Fender's new Road Worn '50s Strat guitar delivers that killer aged look, feel and mojo without breaking the bank; designed using 1950s specs augmented by Tex-Mex pickups and 6105 frets. A true player.

I highly suspect they will be skinned relics much like the LTD's, where all the wear and tear is exactly alike.

Well, as far as relics go, those ESP's have realistic "Les Paul" wear patterns.

Wow! 4 pages of posts and it seems to be unanomous that none of us like the relic idea. I totally hate it. Makes you wonder who's buying? If I wanted a worn out guitar I would put the wear there myself. However, I take good care of my instruments. My six year old strat that I bought new still looks new . . . until you look at the fret wires with the grooves that have began to show up in them!

By the way, ESP does make a "reliced" strat-clone (they call it a "vintage plus"

And here's an authentic Fender Strat "vintage relic"

I like the relic idea a lot. Your six year old stat will likely always look new outside of dings and scratches, modern heavy polyester finishes dont age like the vintage nitro finishes, which is the main reason reliced guitars are getting popular.
