To each their own, I did my old MIM strat simply to do it. It was a fun, low risk, low cost project so why not?I wouldnt dream of doing it to a high end vauluable guitar, but a 10 +year old MIM standard, I dont see a problem with going nutso on it. With todays polyester finishes, your not going to get a nice natural relic look the old fashioned way.

I kinda think thats why the relic thing is getting so popular, todays instruments dont age like the old ones. I have a friend who has an old epiphone that gets tons of road use, outside of few dings that none have penetrated the poly, and somefret wear, it looks practically new once you wipe the dirt off of it. His newer and more cared for LP VOS on the other hand looks like its gone trhough a couple war zones.

See, the poly finish just bugs me...its so thick and glossy and that never changes. I don't think I could bring myself to paying for a new relic'd nitro guitar, myself, for that price since the finish will practically do the job for you in a short time, but with a MIM strat or squire, it just looks unnatural when you get a chip here or there and the metal starts to tarnish but the finish still looks "factory shiney". I'd bet people would be happier if they offered thinner poly with the colors available in a simply less-glossy finish,, but then again suckers like me probably wouldn't be quite as tempted to shell out a lot more money for an American guitar with the (to me) better finish.
Also, the best argument I've heard for the relic'd guitars was this...at one of my favorite local stores last year, the owner just handed me one of the custom Jeff Beck Broadcasters in all of it's reproduced Rocky glory, and after playing for a few minutes I asked how much it was and probably began to panic that my chair would break under me or something, and jokingly he said, "just don't get a chip in it, or the price will go up". I guess it would be nice to never worry about the damage you'll do just playing an expensive guitar dropping the value.

I don't agree with that.

Rory Gallagher had a beat up strat and was very popular a dozen years before SRV got popular.

Check out Rory's 1975 (IIRC) album Against the Grain for a close up of his guitar.

Well, that's a confusing thing, niki. I think they were planning on introducing these new models, but decided not to before any every got out. Does anyone own one? Has anyone actually seen one?

I'll never understand why someone would want to age their new sounding, new looking strat. Strat's should collect marks and imperfections over time.

There has been at least one mention of these new (old? or future?) MIM relic line of guitars. I think "road worn" is the search term that would find it.

The only reason I can think of to artificially "relic" a guitar is to give the guitarist some instant credibility on stage . . . at least until the actual playing starts. I think most people in the audience would simply assume the guitar acquired its condition from years of wear on the road and that the player must have paid his dues as well. Just my thoughts.

I try to take good care of my guitars. My oldest Strat is now 22 years old as of Nov. 1. It has a scratch or two, the plastic has become yellowed except for the pickguard which is still bright white, the frets show considerable play wear, and the screws and saddles have some rust. No false signs of age.

I'm not into the relic thingie. I prefer taking good care of my guitar and have it look as nice as possible.

All i can find on them is the joe strummer tele. I'm equally confused. I keep seeing references to them and a imminent release at namm 09 but nothing reliable enough to take to the bank

I would think that zZounds is a pretty reliable source! I believe zZounds thought they were going to be able to sell these, but they were discontinued before they even came out.

I think that I am just on the relic is the fashion:) Do not just where it happens in a case like that. Hmmm. I know that guy did the same in MIM relic. Pots to the coffee a week, board freezer and then to the oven. Bridge, and keys into the water and then in the earth in the garden. I say seriously. Pickground treated burner and then sun :D
In my opinion, the question of taste.
I would, in its guitar did not relic, unless this would be a Sunburst :D

Have you ever actually seen any? The zzounds ad is interesting, but it doesnt mean they ever even had any, though it does help prove existance. Products get posted premature on the web all the time, and usually get quickly pulled. All the rumors I've heard is they arent going to hit till late Q1 or early Q2 of 09.
