Hear, Hear! I don't see what the big deal is about spending a few hundred bucks to make your guitar look "Vintage"! I would rather my guitars get that way through being used on a regular basis rather than having paying somebody to do what I could do myself, if I wanted to.

I'd like to own a vintage though :D

If Hendrix burned it or Townsend broke it, I could get into it.
Otherwise, I'll do the marking up by just playing and living with my guitars, thank you.
And I certainly have put some nice dings in my "baby". There was that one time ......

Love,
Todd

No relic guits for me. I will do my own relicing through play and save some money in doing so. Just might take 20 years to get it to look some they sell though.

I would personally never buy a relic strat - However, the project guitar I posted pics of a few weeks ago was a lot of fun doing - a friend and I worked on it for a while, and the finished product turned out pretty nice - its a great playing guitar, sounds awesome, yea, we put some knicks and scratches in it, weather checked the nitro a bit - it looks cool - it was put together from spare parts I had laying around - big deal

Now to respond to a few of the messages saying, just play your guitar if you want the relic look - thats not true really - I have a 91 Strat thats been played to death, it has some dings in it, its 17 years old - but there isnt a single wore spot on it, it doesnt look like a relic at all, and its been played!! I have a 01 thats been played prob more than the 91, and there isnt a SINGLE scratch on it- I take very good care of my strats, so I doubt any of them will ever have the "old" "relic" "worn" look, other than the 2 vintage ones I have

To each his own! I think my "relic" project strat looks pretty cool, had lots of comments on it here too

I think I can understand why someone like Keith Richards would buy a relic guitar (he's pretty much a relic himself). I've toyed around with the idea of putting some rub marks on my Strat's arm cut, but I just can't bring myself to deliberately mar that gorgeous Candy Apple Red finish. About two months ago, I accidentally put a little notch in the headstock, and it just about made me sick to my stomach. Nope, I don't think I'll go in for the relic craze anytime soon.

Unless, of course, I win a relic guitar on the Fender site... :P

No relic fan here. I believe you try to keep them in as good of shape as possible. The relic thing is a passing fad imho. It 's one thing when you have an old guitar that you love that has taken a beating over the years but survived, but to buy a new guitar in terrible shape is another.

I still have my first guitar, a mid 70's MIJ gibby clone, but it looks pretty good still, but has some real nicks and dings...I am very proud of that and it still bothers me when something happens to it.

I also have a 95 KH2 that I bought new then and it is is near mint. But one day I was taking the guitar off after practicing while standing, and hit the headstock against a lower section of the ceiling. It put a small chip in the headstock paint. It still bothers me, if I could just have that one tiny moment back...had I been standing slightly in the other direction..., my baby would be perfect. :x

What's next? New rusted out cars?

Also the danger with relic is home made relic jobs and the potential eBay seller who try to pass a crappy relic job as vintage.

Yeah i thing the relic thing is kinda retarded too. It's waaaaay cooler if the guitar has a history with YOU! Just like that other guy said, one is supposed to "earn" the relic. Then others and you know that your guitar has been loved and used a lot

I'm looking forward to that day when i'm 70 years old and can show my grand-children my 50+ years old stratocaster and tell them what this guitar has been through, hundreds of gigs, blood, sweat and overall a loved guitar... And perhaps pass it on to them :)

I have a vintage 1971 Olympic white Stratocaster with a 6 bolt tremelo and 3-way switch. If I bought this guitar with all the nicks and dings it has, my friends would be mortified. This guitar is just old; it doesn't stay in tune, the frets need to be changed, and the original whammy bar will break under normal use (I broke two of them).

However, if E. Clapton or Andy Summers had actually played the particular axe I was buying, then I suppose that is different! Maybe I would buy it as an investment.

I would never buy a new "reliced" guitar, because I like finishes to be smooth. Missing chunks of finish never are adorable and they take away the joy of playing.

I really like the looks of a well done Relic (but amateur jobs not so much, sorry). However, I doubt that I would ever buy one.

I would buy a used guitar that was "naturally reliced," like a couple of mine (that I've owned 30 years!):

To each their own, I did my old MIM strat simply to do it. It was a fun, low risk, low cost project so why not?I wouldnt dream of doing it to a high end vauluable guitar, but a 10 +year old MIM standard, I dont see a problem with going nutso on it. With todays polyester finishes, your not going to get a nice natural relic look the old fashioned way.

I kinda think thats why the relic thing is getting so popular, todays instruments dont age like the old ones. I have a friend who has an old epiphone that gets tons of road use, outside of few dings that none have penetrated the poly, and somefret wear, it looks practically new once you wipe the dirt off of it. His newer and more cared for LP VOS on the other hand looks like its gone trhough a couple war zones.

They were called "Alfa Romero" and you have to go to Italy to buy one now.

Hey Stratheads-

I agree with ya all on the whole relic thing. I think it promotes a false "Badge of Honor" if you will on you and your instrument. It is my opinion that people want to relic their guitars so that it appears as though they earned their playing stripes- like battle scars - some players want to appear "Bad $@!" when really they are just ordinary.

My 2000 MiM Strat is still stock and still in 8 or 9 condition. I have nothing to prove. I take care of my guitars the best I can. When I play them...I play with as much passion and energy as I can. What ever happens...happens.

One of the early post brought up SRV's #1 strat as being the beginning of this whole fad. His guitar was beat up when he bought it used and he beat it even more- He played hard and often and earned every ding, gash and road rash on it. There will never be another SRV nor another #1- People need to cut their own path. Stop lying to the world and eventually they will earn their own "Badge of Honor".

The Freeze
