I am amazed that people go to great lengths to make a new guitar look old and beaten up when, in their heart, they know that the guitar did not "earn" all those scars and wear. It will never sound like a 1960 Stratocaster, or a 1957 Telecaster.
I can truly say that my guitars that look like relics, I have beaten the crap out of them on stages and in studios over the last 30 years. I can tell you where all those scratches and nicks came from cuz I put them there!!! I can also say that some of my older guitars are still in mint condition cuz I took really good care of them, and didn't gig with them.
No offense to anybody out there that likes the relic thang, just the rantings of a complete lunatic who doesn't know everything.

I agree. Relic is a stupid fashion IMO. Started by Vaughan in the 80s, before then, a guitar is "relic state" was considered a junk.

dont like relic's or closet classics either. Its not a old guitar, its hardly been played, it looks knackered and it costs more :!:
not my thing at all.

+10 Paisley. I spent way too much money on my instruments to purposely screw them up. Like you I know where every scratch or ding came from because I did it. Anybody who would purposely carve into their guitar, paint a bad picture on a perfectly good finish, or put dated stickers on with can't get it off adhesive had to be on drugs........Uhhh I think I'm the pot calling the kettle.......

I don't get the whole concept either and have absolutely no appreciation for any of it. What astonishes me more than the popularity is the prices.

I do remember a local music store a few years ago was selling a beat to you know what late 1950s Gibson Melody Maker w/ original chipboard case. The shop owner advertised it this way: "No need for a relic - This baby comes complete with all its original scratches, dents, dings, stains and broken case hardware!" It sold for a ridiculous amount of money. FWIW though, it was 'genuine'.

"One man's junk..."

I do like the styling aspect of it and thought briefly about getting one but decided against it.

After only about 2 months of regular gigging in NYC my '62 RI Strat with its thin skin nitro looks pretty 'relic-ed' and I'm glad because now I can say that that ding there was from a gig at Sullivan Hall, or that scratch... etc.

Also, I realize that if I had gone with a relic and played it hard on top of it there would be absolutely nothing left of it by next year!

I agree with all the posts. I remember a month or so ago, when I was checking out the Gilmore strat, and was looking at the price difference between the NOS, and the much more expensive Relic, I was thinking, why the hell would I pay an extra $500 to have a perfectly good guitar damaged? It goes against any normal thinking. The "already broken in" thing isnt a good enough reason for me. I've only seen (or actually heard) one beat up guitar that may sound better for its bad shape was the Takamine acoustic the guy plays in the movie "Once". It has a 3 inch hole kicked through it below the sound hole. You can actually see the bracing through it. It sounded amazing, and I thought it was because the music must have been recorded with another guitar, but on further research I found out indeed it was played on that guitar. Still I wouldnt dare punch a hole through my $1200 Takamine, with my luck the hole thing would buckle into a pile of wood.

A 3" hole-saw ought to do the trick.

Seriously though, age affects acoustic instruments a lot more than electric ones. I picked up a 20 year old Yahama at someone's house the other day and it sounded just about as good as my Taylor 910! I could not believe it.

I was looking through all the Custom Shop Strats yesterday on this site and I was thinking the same thing as you guys. Out of all these Custom Shop Strats, most of them look like old beat up junkers! I want my brand new Strat to look brand new! Heck, I want my 5 year old Strat to look brand new. I like to take good care of my stuff. I don't want it all scratched and banged up. I hope "reliced" amps don't become super popular! :P

If I were ever to own an old beat up looking guitar I want to be the one to make it old and beat up over a period of many, many years.
