I think "digging in" is open to interpretation. I always considered digging in when you go from striking the strings softly to almost snapping them with the pick. If the guy uses really light strings then he does run the risk of sharping out notes he doesnt want to, I wouldnt consider it being because he "sucks too much' anyway. Sucking is also open to interpretation. I mean; someone may be a virtuoso classical player, or country, but then attempt to play something they dont normally play that requires techniques they havent aquired yet, it doesnt mean that they suck at playing.

That was my point. The guy implied anyone who frets with gusto was a lame-o so I used his own words to turn it around. Ever see a video of SRV playing? There was a guy who dug in and fretted like he meant it. You can actually see the effort he put into it. Something tells me he didn't "suck too much".

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Highway Chile,
Go to your nearest music store and play one of the new Highway One Strats. They have the jumbo frets. See how you like them. I personally prefer the medium jumbos, but alot of folks like 'em big. And, like a previous poster said, you'd have to really be applying alot of pressure to make your notes sharp.

yep thats the guitar i'm looking to get, i have an am standard but I want that satin finish and big frets. from what I can tell the only problem i am having with the bigger frets is that sliding my hand quickly down the neck is a little more rough because the highway one doesn't have "rounded" frets. I played little wiif ng and doing some slides when I noticed this dillema. All in all i like what i see in the highway o. ne...but I like what someone said above me "if your pressing so hard the notes get sharp you probably suck too bad to even notice" -best advice i've gotten yet

Odds are you're feelibg your fret ends because the wood has gotten dry. In the winter the dry air from heaters rob the wood of moisture causing the wood on the neck to shrink, while the frets stay the same size. By a case humidifier, and see if the problem goes away. If during the summer you don't feel the fret ends, then humidity is 100% the problem.[img][img][/img][/img]
I. Find people who say that other peoples playibg sucks for this reason or that tend to be nubes, because veteran players don't usually say thing like that. They tend to try to prop new players up rather than knock them down.

Hi my guitar was recently fret dressed and it took down 50 percent of my fret how now my guitar has no grip for bending like it used to.

should I Refret the original neck or buy a replacement neck?

its an american standard strat from mid 90's with maple neck sprayed

You know Mr. bosskidblues,
I'm confused,in your posts in the Fender Lounge and your letter to Fender ranting about poor products and them not making replacement necks,....you've talked like you have been a player in the business since the '60s or so and I asked you how many necks you have had to replace,to which you replied 5 or 6 over the years due to heavy gigging and rough treatment by roadies and weather extremes, etc.
And here you are asking this question!?
Who made the decisions to make the neck replacements in your past....your roadies, your guitar techs or who?

I didnt see the post on having to replace all the necks, but I can say that there are some reoccuring problems with some of the necks on certain models; Early-Mid 2000's American Deluxes, and more recently the Road Worn. The Am Dlx's issues are twisted necks. The Road Worn come more from the "relicing"; the first batch of them they overdid the the wearing down of the neck edges, and then must have stored the necks somewhere were they werent being taken care of. The fall away was almost none existand, and there just isnt enough fretboard on the edges to contribute to playability (this is actually one of a few problems with those necks, which is a pity because they do have a great feel to them.

If you plan to get a new neck, now would be the ideal time to learn how to refret. If you wear out frets like I do, doing your own fret work can be a easy and great skill to learn. It will save you a lot of cash and it will get you coser to taking tone into your own hands.

DY and custom all the way.

Several people have mentioned Warmouth on this thread. Has anyone tried USACG? I'd be interested to find out how they compare to Warmouth. Do they retofit Fender bodies OK? Also their 7"-9" compound radius sounds good, I think Warmouth's 10"-16" compound would result in quite an un-Fendery feel. Also W don't seem to do a 42mm nut width, their 'vintage' size is slightly narrower.

Warmoth doesn't offer that mm on the vintage necks, you have to move to their other models. I haven't heard from anyone that got a neck from the company you mentioned. I checked them out and kind of dismissed them because of their headstocks, they look like a bad fender headstock copy. I wasn't sure about warmoths compound either. I was going to get a straight radiused neck, then decided to trying the compound and am glad I did. I really like it because it allows me to use smaller frets without fretting out. You can't even feel the flatness further up the neck since you don't bar many chords past the 12th fret anyway.

That's a good point. I also like the range of exotic woods they offer, Very temped by a Kingwood fretboard!
