Although I've played the soft-v neck on an Am Dlx, I didnt really listen for tone, because I was more interested how the playability was. Is there a major difference in the tone between the two? I would think the greater mass of the soft-v would change the tone. I will eventually go and play one, but I figured it I asked, I'd be given the answer and know what to look for.

Good good point. Impossible to tell though unless you spend a day swapping necks on 1 particular body.
All i can tell you is that my baja tele has a very thick U shaped neck. It dwarfs the soft V on my hotrod. The baja does have a impeccable tone to it. It sustains forever, is that down to the neck or the heavy ash body. The guitar weighs 9ilb 5oz but resonates great.

Its a hard one to call mate.

I wonder if the neck might be more stable - stay in tune and hold it's shape better - if it has more mass?

Love,
Todd

No difference in tuning stability that i've noticed. Infact the tele with the U shape slips more than either of my strats or a cheap chinese lespaul copy that i've got.
