Regarding the ashtray covers for the vintage tremolo's. Do they serve any purpose besides cosmetic? They seem like they would get in the way of palm muting. I've never played a guitar with one on, I think I've seen them on pics of the Eric Johnson sig strat.

I read about these in a guitar book, and they are designed to prevent palm muting. I guess some famous guys got mad that they kept on accidentally muting their strings??

The ashtray was designed to give a "clean" look at the instrument, without screw, poles, saddles etc...that were considered to be ugly. The one of the Tele covers all the bridge and the bridge pickup, the one of the strat is smaller and covers the saddles, that were considered ugly and fast to tarnish.

Of course, most of the players removed it, and in the end on the '86 american standard they introduced a bridge with solid saddle that surely looks better than the sheetmetal, therefore the ashtray was not necessary anymore. Now it's just available for the vintage series and it comes removed in the case.
