I recently purchased a 1988 EC signature strat and decided to remove the neck to check the date stamp to see when it was assembled (19 Aug 1988). I also saw a stamp indicating it was built by Scott Buehl - a longtime CS masterbuilder :D. Plays like a dream!

Cool guitar. I like the green color to it.

I think the 7UP green are rare for that early year. Very nice colour though.

I don't even remember that color. It must be rare.
Nice guitar.

Love,

Nice find. I love the original Clapton Strat with the Lace p/ups.

Looks like you did as well with the quality of yours as I did with my '89 Pewter this summer, though I have not yet explored the complete innards of it other than having my tech look inside the control cavity to make sure it was clean. How did you come to acquire it?

As for the green color, I have cited on a thread in the Custom Shop Forum that this was a finish which Eric is quoted as saying he would like to have a guitar done in..i.e....'7-Up" Green. Interestingly, he never played one done in that finish and, after a short time, the "Blackie" was resurrected and the rest of this history is already known.

I concur with Steve on the voice of these pickups and I trust that you will agree with me when I say that these very early models were something special, particularly in the necks.

Enjoy it.

ZZdoc in another thread about early Claptons you asked me informations about the picture of the Torino red Clapton with 21 frets vintage V neck finished in yellowed nitro and switch for the booster, here there is:

You can clearly see the glossy nitro, the 21 frets and the switch between the two tone knobs...the book says:"Early production sample of the Eric Clapton model. Note the 21 fret fingerboard and active/passive electronics switch".

Doc: I have a video of EC playing a green Strat. It was taped from a VH1 show that was hosted by David Sanborn, and has Clapton and Robert Cray playing "Old Love." It was a 30 minute show, and based upon EC's hairstyle it appears to be 1988 to 1990. I did not tape it myself, but was given the tape by a friend that no longer lives around my area. EC wore a purple jacket that really clashes with the color of the Strat.

Wow, thanks for the reminder. You know, I actually watched and recorded that perfomance on tape an lost it in a re-record. "That's the "Journeyman" era, "24 Nights'', and the tragic loss of Conor.

I got it on Ebay from Royal Music in Brooklyn, NY. There's a 1989 7-up green on Ebay now. You're right about the neck - it's the most comfortable I've ever played.

The guitar tone (and playing) on Journeyman is one of the best ever. It is right up there with Texas Flood and Bridge Of Sighs for me.

So, I think that you've got a real piece of guitar history on your hands there!

I used to shop that store when I lived in the Georgetown area of Brooklyn years ago. They are famous for having rescued Carlos Santana's #1 the year it was stolen. The guitar made its way across country and was attempted to be fenced at Royal. Fortunately the people there knew what they were looking at. The entire guitar community had been on alert for months.

That's a really heavily signal processed session there. Particularly "Pretending" for which I remember EC commenting on interview that he got back into using the wha pedal and some heavy flanging to get that tone.
