I own a 2008 am. std. strat, but am now also purchasing a 1994 MIM strat. It seems very playable and fine, but nothing really really special. Just a regular ole MIM strat. Black, Rosewood board.

But the retailer assures me that in spite of the low price he is charging, these strats are becoming collectors items. Is that true?

I doubt it.

But I would be interested in your comparison of between that old MIM and your new MIM; in terms of fit and finish, etc, etc.

Yeah I doubt it too. There is no comparison between the american standard and the MIM I am picking up next week. The 08 american is one of the nicest guitars Ive ever played. But I don't want to mess with it. So I am getting an old MIM that I can tinker with and modify at my leisure, leaving the new american totally stock. Just want the other for fun, gear wise

Nothing against the MIM Standards, but the only way they will EVER be collectible is if the plant gets burned down and they don't rebuild it.

Some of the high end limited runs perhaps, but a reagular old Strat no.

remember the early japanese squires. Alot of them were terrible guitars, i dont remember ever seeing a good one. I think its one of the reasons i was so anti fender in my youth. Their fetching £900+ on ebay uk. That MIM may be collectable one day but i just dont see it today. Look at some of the crap from the 50's and 60's thats worth a fortune now.
sad fact is, with current production levels being so high i dont think any modern gear is going to fetch the kind of cash gear of yore demands.

Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't the first Mexican Strats assembled with components brought down from Corona? The necks etc. were made in USA, and then the various parts were assembled and finished in Ensenada to cut down on manufacturing costs. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that a while back. Anybody help out on this?????

That is true...In fact early MIM strats are desirable because of their quality. They were the forerunners to the Jimmi Vaughan Strat. Early MIM Strats or Tex-Mex Strats as they were marketed actually out sold the American Standard. That's why they pulled the plug on the Tex-Mex models. Fender later changed them to the "California Series" but they were the same guitar. Again, outselling the American Standard. The Tex-Mex model was essentially a Strat that had both vintage and modern features into one nice package. I you can find a early Tex-Mex or MIM for $300-350 do it! You'll be suprised on the playability and tone of the Tex-Mex models!

Early ones were yes. current ones aren't. Not sure when it ended either.

That is correct. Thanks for the clarification. I have a 1996 (neck dated 1995) 50th Anniversary Tex-Mex and it still amazes me how well it sounds compared to my John Mayer Limited and my 2006 (1959) Thin-skin reissue. I've tried to dis the Tex-Mex but it holds up to my more expensive USA models. Maybe I got lucky, but others have said the same thing as well.

I have a Arctic White RW neck MIM standard from '91 (MN0+5 digits 11***). I remember being told that it was assembled in Mexico from US parts but....... The electrics really weren't that great and the pickguard had different hole positions. The hardware was OK but not great. It was however my first real Strat and we will never be parted. Now 17 years later it has been pro modded with Clapton electrics, High Mass trem block, decent tuners, LSR nut etc it sounds way better. The body and neck really are good though.

Recent Mex stuff I have seen has been poorer quality.

Yeah guys that's what he is saying, that its a 1994 so its all parts made in USA but assembled in Mexico. And he said that too, that it was the quality that was making them more desirable, thats why I was asking. I know it doesn't have a street value of much now, but its year and stuff... do you think with all that in mind its just a sales ploy or is there a ring of truth in that statement

A 1994 MIM Strat collectable? If it plays nice buy it and enjoy. But I would not think it is something you would you buy thinking it is a collectable. Use it as it was made to be used, 1994 was yesterday were not talking 1974 many days ago if you no what I mean. And the thing about MIM being made of U.S. parts but put together in Mexico I have no dout they have some U.S. made parts but they are not the same parts and specs as the U.S. guitars.
