Hey, Fender Forum users. I have a question regarding an idea to mod a Stratocaster. I am only in doubt of which body to use. I figured I would buy a Squier Affinity since it is fairly inexpensive and blue. The guitar being blue is a serious object and I am not very confident about refinishing. The other option would be to buy a mexican Fender. The thing that worries me is the difference in the wood quality of the body. E.g. if I changed pickups on the Squier AND the Fender, would the difference in tone be that big? I am prepared to switch out bridge and tuners if necessary (I dream~~ of gold hardware). Thanks for any positive response.

Hi Lyndon, welcome to the Forum.

One reason for not using any kind of Squier body is that you will almost certainly find that aftermarket bridges won't fit the screw spacing on the Squier. Check the spacing of the six pivot screws on the Squier bridge and compare with others. They will probably be different.

You will also likely find that retrofit pickguards may not fit the exact placement of the screw holes on the body, even if they have the same number of holes.

Fender do those kind of little details precisely because they don't want you "upgrading" a Squier into a Fender. They'd rather you just bought a Fender in the first place.

So I'd go with the MIM if I were you.

Good luck - C

There have been some topics lately by guys who have run into trouble making mods to Affinity strats (their bodies are thinner than the "standard" strat, for one thing).

So count me as another vote for starting with a MIM Standard ...

However, if you are planning on going for some kind of transparent finish (through which the wood grain is visible), you may be unpleasantly surprised by what you find underneath the finish of a MIM body ... I'm just warning you ...

A higher-end MIM would have a body made out of a better grade of wood.

If you want a successful mod, I suggest going with the MIM Fender . In almost all cases, "standard" hardware will be a direct fit on the MIM's. This isn't true with the Affinities.

Go MIM and have less headaches
