How does Robin Trower get that amazing tone? Did he ever have a signature series made?

Part of it's the Stratocaster to be sure. And then it's his pedal selection, but you know that.

Your question reminded me of an interview I read of his from about, yikes, 25+ years ago. Asked why he played a strat he said that despite his very obvious Hendrix influence, he didn't play it cuz of Jimi, and had in fact never really tried one. He said that he was a Gibson player, but picked up a strat on stage that was left there by another band they were playing with. He said he picked it up for the hell of it and instantly fell in love with the sound, saying "it had that strident sound".

Guitar Player magazine interviewed Trower a few months ago - I believe it was the April '08 issue & it had Alan Holdsworth on the cover. They asked Trower a lot of questions about his tone of yesteryear and his tone today. Check it out. I do remember that he uses heavier strings and he often used cranked tube amps (notoriously loud). He was a heavy user of the uni-vibe (nowadays a fulltone deja-vibe) and don't forget the overdrive pedal (nowadays a fulltone ocd). In the "Bridge of Sighs" era he favored his middle pu i think but nowadays he favors the neck. He also talked briefly about his new custom shop strat.

Yes there is a Robin Trower custom shop model (no signature series though), you can find it on this website. It seems that this "custom strat" isn't what he really played during the Bridge of Sighs period... but rather what he endorsed a few years back

I have. And he was L-O-U-D. Regarding his tone, there is lots of discussion on his guitars and his amps. Well, there was a LOT of stuff in between those two, too...

A Uni-vibe. This is creates that "swirly" sound on "Bridge of Sighs". Hendrix also was a big user of this pedal which seems to be a reason why Trower used it. He is currently using a Fulltone Deja-Vibe for this effect.

There are several effects manufacturers that make this type of effect today:

1. Dunlop Univibe reissue
2. Voodoo Labs Micro-Vibe
3. BBE Soul Vibe

to name a few. I have sampled sound clips and you-tube videos of all three of these and they sound great. I will probably soon purchase the BBE Soul Vibe myself.

I saw him a few times in the mid-'70s ... whenever he came through on a tour of his latest album.

He had a "fan club" of sorts a decade ago. His management put out newsletters and a cool fan-club-only CD that had some special material ...

"In The Line of Fire" is the only work of his which I own. It is an absolutely stupendous sounding effort. Shortly after it's release, Guitar Player did an interview with him. If I find that I still have that issue in my collection, I will advise further.

Trower's great albums are like that, but even his least popular albums are worthy. There really isn't a bad album in the lot. He never put out a techno, disco, or a polka album, afterall.

His "uni-vibe" is actually a Fulltone Deja Vibe. He uses Fulltone effects exclusively. Their version of the Uni-Vibe is hands down the best on the market. Google them, you will see why he uses them exclusively.
