I played an Eric Johnson this morning. First off, fantastic axe. I LOVED the 12in radius fretboard. It made chords a little more difficult, but im sure i would get use to it. It made lead playing soooo much better. I could do two-step bends without fretting out, and the quarter sawn neck looked just soo right with the sunburst, like they should all look like that. The tone control for the bridge pup was fantastic. Here's my only problem.. Why the hell does he want a glossy neck back? It felt like my hand kept sticking to the back of the neck when I moved up and down the neck. If I ever get up the funds, I'd like this guitar even over an Am Dlx, even though I really like rosewood fretboards. WOULD i BE CRAZY TO SAND OFF THE FINISH? I really hate it, maybe I could refinish it with a satin spray like on the Am stds and Dlx.s
Give me your thoughts.

The stickiness seems to diminish the more you play it.

had the same glossy sticky neck problem on my 57hotrod. Polishpolishpolish then polish some more. After plenty of elbow grease the stickiness was gone.

Hi Windwalker. Two things: first is that there is a new Eric Johnson sig due out, as far as I understand to add to rather than replace the existing model. In the previews we've seen that one is going to have a bound rosewood fingerboard - very unusual for a Fender (though not unique, by a long way, of course). Some nice '60s-ish custom color finishes too. So if you can, wait around a little for that guitar to come out - it is likely to be worth it!

The other thing: don't worry about that "sticky" neck. In my own experience is takes a good long time for that sticky feeling to wear away, but the lightest rub over with grade 0000 wire wool (from any hardware store) will fix the issue in a minute. Rub just enough to take the sheen off and then stop: you don't want to risk actually going through the lacquer.

Cheers - C

That sounds like a good idea
