Although I really don't like John Mayer at all, I do like his strat. But can anyone tell me why when I play any of his signature models,(Ive tried 3 so far); when I try to bend a note on the neck any higher than the 12th fret, it just goes dead??? I thought it was just the guitar I was playing, but when I tried two different ones, they did the same thing. It's the weirdest thing Ive ever seen, or heard.

Sounds weird. I have played lots of JM sigs and have not had that problem. Maybe they were set up a little off of the neck shifted a little since being built. Guitars are wood after all. I'd ask the store to set it up if they have a good luither.

It's fretting out. The action is set too low. Very common. The expensive fix is to replace the neck with a neck that has a larger fretboard curvature. Stratocasters (including the JM) are equipped with a 9.5" radius fretboard. Using a 12" or greater radius will reduce the tendency to fret out. But it will be less comfortable, particularly for barre chords. Then you have to worry about the pickup magnet staggered heights.

But a good setup would probably go a long way toward solving the problem.

Hi, My mia std strat had the same problem when I dropped the bridge to be flush with the body. I tried several adjustments and I could not get it fixed 100% (either get a dead note, a fret buzz or intonation was off). Then I took it to the luthier guy that know what is he doing and he readjusted the saddles (they were off due to my messing with them) and a truss rod adjusted and all was good to go. No more choking above 12th and loooooowwwwww action.

hope that helps

Blimey! I think you may find slackening the trussrod a quarter turn or so, and perhaps raising the saddles a hair might be a more cost effective route to the same end...

Cheers - C

They weren't choking or really fretting out, it was different. The tone just went dead when I bent it over a step
