Hi there - I'm hoping you knowledgeable folks can help me out :)

I have a Classic Player Strat and it has a screw-in trem arm. With the arm screwed in and the arm in the in-use position (swung up to the hand position) there is some 'slack' in the arm, and you can feel a little looseness in the threads when using it, so when trying to make subtle wobbles you are overcoming this backlash first. If I screw the arm in tighter so that there is no looseness, the arm further around, and when I bring it back to the playing position, it's looser again (if I try and take it around another turn tighter it feels veeeeeery tight as though it's going to cause damage if I go further (even if I could physically get it to go far enough). Is there a way to remedy this? Maybe some PTFE tape on the threaded part of the arm?

Any suggestions?

thanks

Try the tape on the threads trick.

What you are experiencing is quite normal.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but all the tremolos have a small spring in the tremolo arm hole, sort of like the spring you see when you open up a click pen. They all have a tendancy to fall out very easily, actually if you manage to buy a guitar that hasn't stayed in its original box, odds are the spring will be gone. Anyhoo, the spring adds some tension to the arm to keep it in place, so if its gone, the arm will tend to swing around. That being said I played a Classic Players strat sunday to get a feel for the 12in radius fretboard (which I really dig) and this particular one was assembeld horribly, MIM strats tend to leave the factory with some problems, nothing that a proper setup wont fix, SO its very possible that there is a problem with the threading. Even the American Deluxe I had the hole for the allen wrench at the saddle screw hight adjusters were stripped out on the A and D strings. Drove me crazy, and made me wonder who the hell did the setup at Guitar Center. I'd take to someone to look at, and if it's a guitar you bought new, the warranty should cover it if it was a manufacturing mistake.

I stopped by the local guitar shop today - 50 pence for the little spring, dropped it in, job done.

Cheers

Perfect. If you dont use the tremolo too much, and tend to have it out, you may want to put some tape over the hole. I've also seen a metal kind of plug in some strats.
