Any thoughts on the YJM or hs-3 by DiMarzio. Thinking of bridge and neck positions.

Hello bradymoore and welcome!

The YJM and the HS-3 are the same pickup except for the polepiece stagger. The YJM has a 1950s design staggering whereas the HS-3 has a more modern design. This 50s staggering of the polepieces changes the pickup's magnetic field and makes it a bit brighter in comparison to the HS-3. In terms of output, believe it or not, both pickups are relatively weak among most Stratocaster ilk pickups as Malmsteen relies heavily on extremely loud amplifier volume for his sound. To my ear, under 'normal' playing conditions, not only is either pickup noticeably weak, but I perceive either as lacking in usual Stratocaster pickup frequency response parameters as well.

I had a Hs-2, a 3 and a YJM in my Strat before switching to the VV series.

They deliver the typical Malmsteen sound you can hear in his records, they "smooth" the notes in a peculiar way, they're absolutely silent therefore effective if you're using high gain amp or preamps. Run through a DOD 250 and a Vox AC30 they give you a creamy distortion, very sweet. On a clean channel they sound darker than stock american standard pickups. slightly less output, but not too much. I didn't notice any difference in sound between the YJM and the HS-3, in the end I consider the different poles just a stylistic choice. The Hs-2 sounds more stratty, and it was told that in the 80s Johnson used them, disconnecting the lower coil, to achieve his "vintage" strat sound.

Ironically, when I tried the Johnson signature Strat, I thought it used the Hs-2.

In general, I suggest to use the HS-3s and YJM if you play rock, carefully setting your amp and stompboxes they're a interesting choice for the player who doesn't want his Strat to be eye piercing in the high frequencies.

With a hs-3 in the bridge and a yjm in the neck, in know the Malmsteen tone should be there but I also am looking to get a Robin Trower type blusey sound. Is this achievable?

I would definitely think so.

What is the name effect that Robin Trower uses? Besides the Wah-Wah.
