The guitar by definition is right handed. It seems obvious to me that you understand, by now, that one can order a southpaw stratocaster to those specs but it will not carry the 'moniker' any longer.

Ya, I know. It's just that, as a Lefty I'm a little cranky. Fender is way better than most companies. But, I bring to your attention the special Jimi Hendrix Monterey Strat that came RIGHTY! It WAS a lefty Strat flipped over.
I know, there are many more righties. It's a business.
I do not care if it's officially called a Clapton Strat or not. If I really wanted to play one, I'd have one made LIKE a Clapton. If I really wanted to own one to appreciate, I'd get a real righty one and just let it sit in the closet earning money for me.
I think we can all agree, as guitarists, that that would sad and wrong. Guitars are to be played.

Love,
Todd

What you need to even the playing field is a Doyle Bramhall Signature Stratocaster.

I tend to Todd's variant more. The signature is absolutely not important, and the inscription "Blackie" even irritates, as at "Blackie" there was 21 frets at least. Here to Vintage ‘57 it would approach more. Besides, Fender officially sells Lefty Vintage ‘57. I think, it is necessary to cease this pursuit of a name of Clapton and simply to take that Vintage ‘57. Only to put five-way switch and not to change anything...

I am guarded only with that shop with Lefty. Why it is not present in dealers on site Fender Custom Shop? It Also looks nonprofessionally. It is unpleasant to me to call into question their goods, but I trust the primary source, that is Fender more.

Might I suggest that you don't rush to put a 5-way switch in. (It is easy to do, btw, I did it and I'm not mechanical at all.) If you like that Hendrix out-of-phase sound, you can get it by positioning the 3-way switch manually between positions 1-2 or 2-3. On my '77 (Lefty) Strat, it even holds it's position! (I believe Hendrix would put tape on the switch - but he did put on a bit of a show, you know.)
Give it a try if you end up getting the '57. You can always go get the 5-position switch later if you don't dig it.

Love,
Todd

(I believe Hendrix would put tape on the switch -

There's a photo of EC in the Christies catalog playing one of the stage guitars which went to auction. He has a piece of tape at the 1/2 position. It's the only photo of him playing where I've ever seen it done. It's strange because the guitar is supposed to be fitted with a five position switch. (Maybe Eric's isn't.) Perhaps there was something about his set
list which warranted his hitting that setting without fuss.

As an anecdotal observation, he comments in the narrative on his 'Blackie' that the 'inbetween' sound on that guitar was supberb and so particular to it that it could not be reproduced the same on the EC Signature Series guitars or any other for that matter.

I will solve when I will get. Thanks. You opened my eyes :)

Yes, often heard from owners of signature models that sound Blackie does not manage to be reproduced. Well a unique case. Even from one conveyor different sounding... And a derivative what guitar is Blackie? ' 57 or ' 62? Or another?

The tale is told essentially as such: In the early '70's when Eric was touring in the south and Strats were less popular he happened to frequent the ShoBud instrument venue. He bought a clutch of strats at about $100 a pop and brought them back to England, distributing them among his friends, notably George Harrison and Pete Townsend. From those remaining he cobbled the best parts to his liking and assembled one whole guitar.

In the Christie's catalog this guitar lot # is described as a '56-'57 composite Fender Stratocaster. It is likely that even the number on the neck plate may not be related to either the neck or the body of this guitar.

Just a few anecdotal comments: '57 bodies have a very deep offset waist relief compared to later guitars. They share the soft body contours of that period and have a specific type of rout for the pickups and control cavity. The necks were traditionally v-shaped but....and this is interesting....the neck on the Gilmour is called a '57V (for vintage) and is more of a C-shape but as comfortable as the neck on my '89 Clapton or the neck you will find on the new '57 Hotrod.

A.R.Duchossoir's book on the Fender Stratocaster is a good source of comparative photographs of this kind of 'materia fender'.

Guitar Centers do have a "lefties" corner, to the best of my knowledge.

Keep us posted on your pursuits.

On soft V necks i'm sure their shaped to emulate years of play wearing down the point of the V. That could be what is being experienced on the gilmour V. I'm certain its the idea behind the hotrod V.

That's an interesting perspective, but remember that neck went on The Black Strat new, so in '85 it already represented a type. If you read into the book, Taylor's ordered necks from Charvel...."Fender' necks!!....i.e.
Charvel did the necks and put a Fender logo on.Interesting :!: :?:  Now there's a picture ih the book of the tech who manufactured the '57V neck, holding it. The background on that neck would be interesting to know.

You, of course, know the feel of that '57 Hotrod due to my gentle nudge in that direction...i.e. "Go buy it!!" :P and, having played all three; my ;89, the Gilmour, and the '57 Hotrod they are all equally comfortable to me.

I still lay my bet on my theory that the '57 Hotrod neck was copped from the Tribute Blackie but only someone in the group who has played both could expand on that . Wonder if alain fits that description.

Well.....I'm off to my grandchildren for Thanksgiving and will be back here late Thursday my time or Friday sometime.

Your additional thoughts are anticipated.
