I'm used to playing a strat w/ a 9.5 in radius fretboard. My question is this; I find myself doing alot of step/half, 2step bends in which I fret out a little. Its not a crazy amount like vintage neck would do. I went to guitar center to play an eric johnson or deluxe players, just to get a feel for a 12 in radius, the problem was that there was only a deluxe players, and it was set up horribly. The strings were all shifted towards the high e, like the neck was on lop sided (1 of a number of unsettling problems with this guitar, would never buy based on this), so I wasn't really able to get a good idea how it was to play. ( I guess I haven't asked the question yet). Does the larger radius only affect the curvature of the fretboard, or is it wider as well? At this point the 9 1/2 radius I know like the back of my hand. It's not really a huge deal, but I figured if the next neck I get has aclose enough feel to the 9.5, and I dont have to worry about fretting out, maybe I'll go with this. I always get alot of great advice here, so here is where I post the question.

Ok from what i've experienced with radi'i it only affects curvature not width. That said my 12" radius jackson has a wider neck than my 7'1/4 or 9'1/2" strats. My Esp Ltd has a 12" radius and narrower neck than my strats though.

I have a 79 with 7.25 and a 2007 with 12 and I'm pretty sure the width is the same but now I'll have to measure just to be sure.

Just checked the specs on this site. The neck is 42mm at the nut, which is absolutely standard for a Strat. And of course the width at heel will be the same as every other Strat (at least those made after 1954-55ish!).

So the 12 inch radius does not imply a wider neck. So many people here have felt that EJ to be their ultimate guitar I think if it is even on your mind you gotta find one to try, at the very least.

Good luck - C

Right, it's just flatter.
