I guess when there's a "real mathematics" problem at hand, "one" might come out ...

Hey, Orvilleowner: what's this sequence?

1597 4181 5778 9959 15737 25696

Oooh, a math problem! let's see
1597 + 4181 = 5778
4181 + 5778 = 9959
5778 + 9959 = 15737
9959 + 15737 = 25696

But what's the meaning (and why 1597)?

Good - you win a cookie! And the name of that sequence?

(1597? Just thought it would be too easy if I started it at the beginning...)

I believe the answer you're looking for is "Fibonacci."

That's an easy one, man!

Now do I get to quiz you?

It's the same formula as the chambers of a shell. Pretty cool.

Love,
Todd

Continuing the mathematics theme, here's a nice fraction which approximates quite closely the important irrational number pi

355/113

Excellent.

I've just been hurting my head trying similarly to find a straightforward fraction to produce another famous (infamous) number. But I can't do it. Can something be done with

φ = 1.6180339887

:?:

Just been reading up on that one: I think my eyes are starting to bleed.

BTW: in case there's the slightest doubt, there is no competition going on here. That would be like pitting Orvilleowner's Olympic athlete against my hobbling leper.

I feel like I am back in School. Just wish I could remember how to do all the things I learned back then and have not used often enough to keep in fresh in mind.

Truly not!

Yes, I had a struggle with that Wiki page - and retired bruised.

It had never occured to me till your post but can that ratio be expressed as a simple fraction?

I have my own reasons to dislike that number - but that doesn't prevent me wanting to know more about it...

Since it is irrational, no simple fraction will exactly equal it, but there are fractions that will come as close as you desire.

I got to 199/123 - and then stopped. I was trying to see how you'd do it methodically but then I started having murderous fantasies about my high school math teacher, so I thought I ought to leave it be...

Er, what was this thread originally about...?

All this amazing math and yet, I posit that all we really need is for someone to yell, "one, two, three, four..."

And then we rock.

Love,
Todd
