Figured and Flame are not the same in my opinion. Figured means some irregularities in the wood and some deviation to a normal plain top. A flame top or neck is a consistent pattern throughout. Getting a flame neck is desirable to some, I would not say that a figured neck is a poor mans flame.

Hope that helps!

Sorry if I correct you, but flame, quilt and figured maple aren't caused by particular eather conditions, they're genetic anomalies of the trees, they tried to "breed" these variants but they were unsuccessfull, once it was tought that it was caused by the stress on the wood by the wind, but windy areas where maple is grown don't experience a higher % of figured maple in the trees....

Dear Ceri,
It's official, I'm now a fan of yours. You always seem to have great information. And nice "guitar porn" pictures. Thank you.

Love,
Todd

Why shucks, thank you, Todd. :D

I should point out, those pics of raw timber are not my own (I wish!). I found those pictures on the net.

It's turning into a great thread isn't it, with all the photos of fancy guitar fronts? Let's hope Mr Eibach posts a pic of his Les Paul, cos that one has a seriously ziggy front!

More pix of snappy guitars, gentlemen! Here's an excuse to show of all your non-Fenders...

Cheers - C

You too huh? I've been learning from Ceri's post for the last year! I always enjoy (and learn) when he and some of the other prominent posters get into detailed discussions! Just set back and soak it in. My problem is retention!!

Very cool info. and nice pictures.

In the end when choosing the wood is......how does it sound.

Kinda like a attractive partner without any substance within the cranium.

I'm not religious but, AMEN to that.

Seriously, I love learning. And I love meeting people with good (even funny) information. Thank you.

PS Fhopkins - you're obviously very cool too.

Love,
Todd

Yeah - I guess you'd have to be a mathematician to draw a Venn diagram of how that works...

Of course, if you're a member of KISS, it might just be that your guitar is on fire.

Love,

Not that there's anything wrong with that ...

Now if only we had one handy...

[Calling] "Is there a mathematician in the house, please?"
